3.4L V6 Hilux - Extractors

Post by Uncouth »

Gday, new to the forum and had a quick look around ofr this topic to no avail so here we go...

I rang a local exhaust shop on the Sunny Coast to enquire about having extractors fitted to my Lux but they say that nobody makes them at this stage and suggested that the best thing I could do for fuel consumption would be to change the air filter to a KNN rewashable?? one. But I'd like some extra grunt too.. :D

I've also read on another forum (overlander 4wd) that you can get some extra grunt and better fuel consumption from chipping it (unichip) for a little over $1k. The guy said this...
I have to find my dyno sheets, but the old torque and power figures are now much lower in the rev range.
i think the old 124kw of power occurs 1500rpm less on the new tune
i think the old 291nm of torque ocuurs 1200rpm less on the new tune
What I was wondering is if I can get some extractors custom made for my Lux... and is who makes them important to their performance? I realise I'll be paying extra for the custom build...

...also.. are their any other mods that anyone would recommend to get some more grunt and better fuel consumption such as the chip..?

Cheers

I inquired about my 3.4 hilux all over the place. Getting extractors custom made, I was quoted between 2000-35000 dollars and had to leave the car up to 2 weeks at some places. Bugger that!

TRD ones dont fit because of the right hand drive steering column here.

Have heard from some blokes who chipped their V6's only to hear that their hilux's drank more fuel.

Theres a US forum

http://www.yotatech.com/forumdisplay.ph ... c291f&f=60

with a bloke in the 1995-2004 section organising to get some cams made up after market to get more torque out of these engines and seeing who was interested.

Supercharging is complicvated with these engines from what ive read, getting them running right is the problem. You need a 7th injector, after market fuel remapping or something like that, end up costing heaps and would be better of saving your money and fitting a turbo diesel (which is what Im contemplating) or a V8 on gas.

mmaaxx thanks for your reply.... Sounds like an expensive move going for the customs. I think someone on the other forum was quoted about $1800 for some customs but don;t quote me on that...

Try KV's mostly does street car fab work but he is lke 1500 bucks cheaper than anywhere else my mate was pricing. chev eng in to torana (hard pipes to do) 07 5451 0100 might be worth a shot

OK before I had my lux I had a 3.8 commo and played around with it a bit.

Chipping it is not worth it unless you get more done to it like extractors, 2.5" sports exhaust, cam and a few other things, then once these have been done you get the chip custom programmed for the mods you have had done.

By just adding the chips the only thing you will acheive is drinking more fuel and revving higher, there will be a slight increase in power due to the extra fuel but nothing overwelming.

As for the K&N I didnt notice much difference wiht it until I got the extractors and sports exhaust.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Hey Zam,

I think Craig's talking about a 5VZFE Toyota V6, not a commo V6.

Craig, why don't you start with a Snorkel... that'll give you a little more power for a relitively cheap price ~$350.

Thanks all for your replies!

Sic Lux, I just rang KV's... goin down there this arvo tso he can have a look and quote me on it. Sounded like he'd be able to help! Thanks for that!

Zam Mick's right, I am referring to the v6 that comes stock on the 04 model hilux.

Mick, that's probably not a bad idea, then I can go swimming too :D

Let us know what the quote is for the extractors and what is involded as in what pipes to the back, what sort of cat or just into the stock exhaust.

Not a problem guys, but generally more motors are the same, that was my experience with the commo v6 so I assume that a toyo 3.4 v6 will be much the same.

Anyways all the best with the power quest.

I went and saw the guy at KV's (nice bloke btw), he said I'd be looking at around $2k for the job. He says he does most V8's from between $1-1.5k to give me an idea and basically said he can do it but the amount of labour involved is the real killer. I'm pretty sure he said he'd need to re-route some things under the hood too. Sorry I can't explain what he said a little better, I'm not too car literate.

Hi Craig,

Chased around the concept of extractors on a 3.4 V6 lux too. I found that the Prado guys (same motor) recommended to change the muffler to a straight through variety. I did this, and did notice a difference, it was heaps louder too. It does rev up easier and I found in 4th on the highway, I could floor it and it would respond better. Not great, but better.

At the moment, the extra noise is really starting to annoy me, so I am considering bolting the original pipe back on and dealing with the minute drop in power.

I have read far and wide, and spoken to a couple of performance shops in Melbourne. The shops tell me a unichip will do wonders, but other people, as in the posts above, don't say the same. Those figures look good, but I decided awhile back to drive it for what it was, and not get too concerned. Extra performance is like throwing 100 dollar notes into the wind. Generally I love my lux, except for the performance. I just wish I had of spent the extra on a TD when I bought it. Its sad when you drive the wifes 1.8 Astra for a weekend, and it feels like a race car

Hi Andrew, it's a shame that extractors are such a pain in the arse. I wish someone would steal my lux and overhaul it it! You know the deal... some foose wheels, v8 etc.

I think I'll just live with it the way it is... and maybe look at the K&N air filter for a bit better economy and a snorkel.
