'97 coily engine losing all power!

heres what has happened so far for a bit of history....

now what is still happening is, i will be driving along all good and it will lose all power, it seems to happen more on gentle uphills, to rectify this i have to find the perfect amount of accelerator(spell?) which is usually just off idle and it will keep going for a while at that perfect accelerator setting, more and it dyes less and it dyes, BUT, if i stop on the side of the road for 3 mins, turn it all off and start it again it will be fine for about 10 mins and start doing it all again. when it runns well i floor it and it seems to have a lull in the acceleration curve under power. spark or fuel????

Sounds like a fuel tank breather problem. Air is not getting into the tank fast enough, so as you suck fuel out it gets vapour lock.
When parked air has a chance to seep back in, thus relieving vaccuum effect.. To test theory drive without fuel cap on.
Mud can get into the carbon canister in engine bay.
I ran a breather hose from can to a dry spot.
Carbon cannister faults, or crushed lines to it can be an issue.
I've replaced 3 on mine in 11years

Also carby icing can cause this, when going fast in extreme cold, carby freezes up, especuially if snorkle fitted.
When parked engine heat rises up and frees carby.

This would only be a cold weather problem. Mine won't run on highway in Winter unless I shut off snorkle and get air from the engine bay.

Mine does the same thing. Except it only happens every now and again and only on hwy's. I will cruise @ 100km then all of a sudden feel a loss in power. I put my foot down and will only get moving if its fully planted. If i back off it backfires/coughs/splatters. Sometimes it fixes itself and it may or may not happen again during that trip. In worse cases i have to pull over let it idle (which is usually very low at that point) pump the accelerator a few times and then back to normal, full power and normal idle.

Dunno what the weathers like where you are but I had that problem and it was because the carby was icing up.

After stopping for a while it would warm up again and all was well.

It was because I didnt have the hose from the exhaust manifold connected (it fell off..) to the airbox.

im gunna try the fuel tank thing, because i noticed on the way home i filled up and the vacume in the tank was amazing thanks for the help

Does sound very much like a fuel problem. Could be a suspect fuel pump or junk floating in the carb. May even be the float needle and seat sticking.

i have had a similar problem in an old hilux i once had and it turned out to be a blockage in the fuel pickup in the fuel tank itself once i blew the fuel lines back from the engine bay to the tank i never had the problem ever again

I had something similar where engine started losing power as you start going uphill. Turns out it was only a blocked up fuel filter. Blocked with what im not sure, could have been faulty or there could have been some gunk from the fuel tank. But its worthwhile replacing that first as they are pretty cheap.
