I'm trying to remove the plastic sill protectors from benieth the doors of my '91 Sierra - How do I un-pick the spot-welds which hold the sil-protector 'bracket' to the body without damaging the body?

Drill and bog :)

To get the brackets the plastic sill protectors attach to, off of the body work, you will need to drill out the spot welds.

I can't remember the size bit (it is the sort of thing you can judge by eye anyway). You just need to drill through the spot weld then pry off the bracket.

Then when you have a collection of nice little holes in the side of your Zook, just bog them up and paint

You can get specific spot weld drill bits designed to take them out with minimal drilling into the body panel behind. Maybe worth considering getting one if you worried about punching a hole clean through. I borrowed one from a panel beater mate.

...so it turns out I am much more impatient than I thought - I took to the spot welds with a grinder, pinch-bar and a pair of pliers, it all turned out suprisingly neat!

That's the way, did you do a virtual lift or cut the back off while you had the grinder out.

How much rust did you find, when I took mine off the brackets had huge holes back the sills were hardly touched, lucky I would say.

The rust wasn't too bad, only a little bit of surface rust on the sills which will easily sand out... this is a 'modification' I recommend anyone doing; it prevents unknown rust damage and makes the wheels look like they stick out just that little bit further!

I drilled and ripped mine off a few weeks ago as well as part of my ute upgrade. :armsup:
I was going to do checker-plate sills or something stupid, but i reckon i will just bog up the holes and paint over it all. Then some sliders/steps underneath should keep it all safe.

It never rains down here, but when i took the bracket things off, they were packed with WET sand! I'm really glad i got to them when i did.

I used a grinder to get swamp donkeys off, just grinded the top layer off.....no holes
