diff ratio, BJ42

Post by red rattler »

hi all, i am looking at putting new crown wheel an pinion in my bj42, 1982 and was just wondering what the factory diff ratio is? Someone told me 3.7, is that correct? I am currently running 33's and was also wanting to know if i should get a lower ratio , the car is mainly used for 4 wheel driving, and if so what new ratio should i get. Any info on what you have done would be great. thanks.

I agree with Bad relig, I run standard 4.11:1 with 34' tyres with no problems, although turbo does help

thanks for that BJ and bad_relig, much appreciated. the reason i asked was because my rear diff appears to be making a bad "wine" noise whan driving and i was thinking of replacing the crown wheel and pinion, but i think i will first try some thicker oil and see if that fixes it. hopefully!!
Cheers , Chris

check that the pinion is not loose - just grab it an give it a shake. If it is, you may be able to cure the whine by tightening the pinion nut (in middle of the drive flange), they often work loose. And if there's a crush tube in there, tighten the nut a bit more using a long wrench or rattle gun (CAREFULLY) and u can improve the backlash. Worth trying before u pull it apart. It worked for me!

hmm i had similar symptoms and it turned out to be my T case idler bearings... but your probably in luck, you've got a split case so they're stronger.
