i hopefully will be trading in the rangie soon for a NH/NJ and would prefer a 2.8TD, but have had a look and there are a fair few 3.0V6s around with fairly good kms and going pretty cheap.
Anyone know how much the 3.0 uses on average (like kms/100) and also anyone know what the 2.8TD would be?

My 2.8TD gets from" 11 lts / 100 kms to 14 lts / 100 kms"
depending how heavy the right foot is and loaded up I am.
Usually it's about " 12.5 lts ",and my injectors and fuel pump are due
for a service

Thats not too shabby... different engine but, our 3.5L manual with the same driving conditions + a roof top tent skulls 19L/100... and then if theres a tail wind it will drop down to about 13L/100 (damn you wind!!!)-Scott- wrote:That is what I would expect, yes.
FYI, fully loaded, headwind, aircon, cruising around 115 in a 110 zone, my 3.0 can chew 16l/100km.
'94 nj GLX. Purchased with 215000km. Now at 365000km.
Runs 235/85R16 tyres the whole time with the speedo corrected shortly after purchase. Have kept fuel records for 99.9% of the time. Average 11.9L/100km with manual free wheeling hubs (done approximately 30000km with the hubs on), about 12.0 before the hubs. Average economy has varied depending on how old the tyres are (BFG ATs). Good economy on gentle highway trips is about 10L/100km. Heavy usage on a heavily loaded "fast" trip (about 600km, fully loaded including roof rack packed about 12" high, Eden to Lithgow, 4000rpm gearchanges, foot flat in 2nd gear up alot of hills between Goulbourn and Lithgow......) about 14.2L/100km. Annual trip into Wonnangatta Station gives about 14 - 15L/100km, but this is also made up of a bit of general use upon return, only use about 2/3s of a tank on the trip.
Pump never off. Injectors done at 300000km.
Still on the original clutch.

the free wheeling hubs 'disconnect' the wheel from the drivshaft, thus stopping the driveshaft/diff etc from turning during 2wd driving.
gives a bit better economy and reduces wear on cv's/cv boots especially helpfull when torsion bars are cranked to give front end lift.

how good were the 2.5tds in the Gen 1s? there is a nice Exceed Jap import for sale near where i live at a good price.
What im trying to work out is whether im better off forking out the extra cash for a diesel (also trying to find a good one) or just buying a lower km V6 which would also generally be lower kms

2010 D4D Hilux
If your gonna be towing a bit, i would reccomend the 2.8 turbo diesel over the petrol. People say that the diesel's are a bit more expensive to maintain, but if you can do oil/filter and fuel filter changes yourself, the difference is pretty minimal. Go for the NH/NJ onwards if you can afford it, better donk and few more upgrades as you would expect in a newer model.
