Hi guys, I want to fit a turbo 700 auto box behind my chev in me shorty 40, I was told that there are few variations - how do I identify the differences? - which commodores have the right boxes to use?

The people to speak to would be Marks Adaptors or have a look on their web. Ther is a full list and specs there. Dave

maybe not the t700... I shouldn't be replying to this but I"m sure there's another chev box that is better for the job. check through 4x4 monthly they might have some more info on it!!! sorry for the vagueness.

The T400 is the stronger auto but it's only a 3 speed. T700 can be built stronger it just depends how much power you want to put through the box.
I know of a T400 for sale if your interested, would have to check if it bolts to your engine.

my mechanic told me and my mate to not put a t400 into high powered engines as they are a bit to sluggish for them. we were going to put one in 308 torana. so id imagine it would be a similar story with the chev. correct me if im wrong
If all else fails, use a bigger hammer

Turbo 400 are big and strong but use a lot of power to run, there are better alternatives for a torana, but i have used one in my landcruiser.

Before 93 the turbo 700 was called a 4L60, was hydaulic and has 4 gears, is basically a turbo 350 with extra gear

After 93 it is a 4L60 E, has a computer, same as above only electric control
from usa we get a 4L80 E, is bigger, basically an electric (computer) turbo 400 with 4 gears

I would think the 4l60 is a little small for hard 4wding, but they can be made stonger, long term may still be marginal depending on how hard a time you give it, i would use a turbo 400 (pretty cheap, really strong) or 4L80 E ( really dear, really strong)
