Ur right
HAHAH, they r a prick of a thing.. The whole dash has to come out to get the dreaded heater box out.. A good thing if you have aircon, the box will come of without touching the evaporator!!.
The lever moves a flap & a coolant valve... but the setup will shock you as did me,, and im a mechanic
I ran straight heater hose from the heater core to engine bay.. Just fit a universal valve.. ( i used vaccum operated VS tap, acts as bypass when open)
Hope this helps,, I also hope after the effort that its a MK/MQ

God of Magnificant Ideas!
Looks as if ya Saturday arvo is booked
Prick of a job that takes up huge time to do, dont replace the "tap", just bypass it alltogether with a bit of copper pipe.
The heat wont come through with the tap missing as a flap covers the heater core when the control settings are on "cold".
Dont forget to flush the heater core while ya at it and check it for leaks too, I've seen heaps that have let go in the last few years.
Oh.......
A mate would be a real handy thing to have around when ya doing it.
