24v winch on 12v vehicle

another option i was told by an auto elec is to run 12V alt, 12V starter, 12V main battery and 24V aux battery. A 12-24V inverter with step up the 12V prduced by alternator to 24v for 24v battery and winch

Only issue may be the wire guage to/from battery and winch. Even if you have to upgrade the wiring it is still by far the easiest option that fiss-parting around with multiple battery switching.

About 25-30% of the light output is as a result of the last 5-10% of the rated voltage (ie for "12" volt globes 12.5 compared to 13.8 volts). This is the reason most people get good results from a simple upgrade to the headlight loom rather than upgrading the light globes (further loading down the OE loom). The resistance of a globe is not constant, the cold resistance is less than the hot resistance.
24 volt globe on 12 not really a line of thought worth pursuing.
24 Volt alternators are available from Bosch, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, and several other manufacturers new, or from auto elecs refurbished. Look for small trucks and some import models of Patrols at the wreckers for second hand.
for anyone upgrading their headlights, such as new wiring loom and higher wattage globes, you can use couple of diodes in series with your lights to make them city friendly.
as Damika and 4sum4 said, just dropping small voltage will reduce the globes output by up to half. the idea is to upgrade the wiring loom, wack in some high wattage globes for brighter lights, but put a (power) diode in series with the each low and or high beam filament that can shorted out with a switch & relay. when in the city or whatever, flick switch in the diodes for duller lights, and when you want full brightness the flick switch to short out the diodes via chunky relay
