hey fellas,

as some of you might of noticed from some of my other posts im getting itchy to progress on the turbo front.. but have a few questions..

i'm keen to get a denco kit at this point in time (personal preference mainly at this stage) for my 3b with approx 340 000km on the clock.

firstly.. is it worth driving down to denco at wagga wagga for the install and tune or is it something that I could do myself? I'm thinking i would prefer a reputable shop to do it cos then if they break an exhaust stud (for example) then its not my problem its theirs.. (it is a 20yr old 40 after all)

alternatively.. is it worth purchasing the kit off somewhere like 4x4store.com.au (at a slightly cheaper price) and attempt to install it myself?

I know there are a few different kits out there, and I know you can get parts and make a junkyard turbo.. but i'm after a kit that'll preferrably just plug straight in so the less mucking around the better.

obviously i would like to try and save as much $$$ as possible during this exercise (HAHA!) so any options would be considered..

I guess the questions i have are:
1) is it worth driving to denco to get fitted (im in brissy, considerable distance from wagga wagga) and tuned
2) is it worth buying the kit and installing the kit myself?
3) if driving to wagga for the install, would they mod plate it for qld? (have asked denco direct but not response yet)
4) are there any other recommended turbo (denco specific) installers in QLD, preferably Brisbane that can do the install and mod plate?
5) if you installed the kit yourself, how easy was it? (plumbing air, oil lines, etc), and how mechanically inclined are you (not much, avg, very?)
6) is there anyone you would recommend to tune it after its installed?
7) is there anything that should be done prior to the purchase to ensure the motor can handle the turbo (ie, visit a diesel specialist for a pre-turbo service?)
8) if you have bought a denco kit recently, did you get a good price (better than advertised by denco?) and if so can you share where from? and what do you think on the quality of the kit and results of the upgrade?

any input is appreciated so I can start to get the wheels in motion and this mod underway!

it is a piss easy job to FIT UP the kit... getting it working properly aint.. Me and TB have done 4 now. Although snapping exhaust studs sux and stops progress

We fitted mine, but ended up driving up to Wagga, and it was worth it by a long shot! The thing flew on the way home, they only had it a few hours.

If I was doing Denco again, I'd let them do it or one of their approved agents...

1) I wouldnt.
2) The kit itself (like said above) is a piece of piss to install...I managed it and I would class my self as average when it comes to mechanical knowledge. Plus if you have and Q's just post them up here
3) I doubt you could get a mod plate in one state, that would be legal in another state.
4) I dont know about reccomended fitters...but seriously the kit is easy to fit yourself.

6) Sean Calcino from Southest 4x4 on the Gold Coast (the conrad jupiters exit) He did mine and I am very impressed
7) Check for blowby, and a compression test would be a good idea. Tappets adjusted too. But if ya going to turbo it anyways...just fit the thing and rebuild motor if/when it blows up.
8) I bought my denco kit (for a HJ60) from Redlands 4wd centre. They did give me a good price...$2569.00

But I also bought a snorkel and a waeco 40ltr fridge while I was there.

Sean said I got about a 30% increase of power :lol: :lol: when it was all tuned in. Cant complain with that.

Fit it urself. But take your time and do it right. Maybe look at replacing your exhaust studs and nuts while your in there... basically do a good job.
When fitting mine I had the help of a diesel mechanic so it if we got stuck it was always a case of give him a yell and help was on hand. Importantly dont rush, perhaps expect to have the car off the road for a while, incase something unforseen happens. IF you run into problems post up here etc..

You wont be able to tune it yourself though. For the tuning just take it to any decent 4x4 diesel centre that knows anything aboooot turboing. ALternatively find a denco approved dealer. Unless you're like 1/2 hr from wagga or something I wouldn't bother.

this is my thoughts as well.. stuff it and see! :P

rang redlands 4wd today to try and get a price on a denco turbo for a 3b but they didnt have that info available at the time.. hope they come back with a decent price..
4x4store.com.au has the kits at a 9% discount so i'm considering that.

when i queried denco awhile ago (like 2004) they gave me this response.

does the bit in bold make any sense to anyone out there? not sure what this means for me if im going to be attempting the install myself.. hope it doesnt mean i need a donaldson aircleaner mounted on the fender.. thatd suck :(

Obviously your current air cleaner won't fit with the turbo. Where is it located - on top of the engine?

You will need to fit something like a hilux or 75/80 series air cleaner.

What exactly came with kit for 1770 bucks. I assume head comes off to lower CR with a new gasket?

with that i got turbo, exhaust manifold, dump pipe from back of turbo, braided oil line, oil return hose, multiple turbo pipe joiners, hose clamps, piping from my turbo to intake manifold and cast alloy 90 degree bend..... really the only thing with the denco kit i had to do was to make up air intake from my filter to turbo intake and a mandrel 2.5inch exhaust :armsup:

there were 3 of us that bought turbo kits thats prolly why i got it for that price........ so liek its been said organise a group and bulk purchase most likely get it for an even better deal :D
