So the great debate starts again - whats cars the best???
Your not going to do any insane 4x4ing - so no need for a locked, loaded, lifted anything.
IMHO - look at the Paj - NL preferably - a 3.5ltr. Yes it has Torsion Bars so lifting is limited but cranking the bars will easily give you a 50mm lift and the NL came std from the factory with a 30mm body lift due to the bigger rear pumpkin. I have owned and Moded an NL - get good tyres, check it has an LSD and that the LSD is working, crank the torsions and you'll get most places easily and in comfort. Fuel Economy - I averaged 13-14 per 100. Plenty of sites explain how to mod them and its a P.O.P.

Dont also discount the Pwado (I currently own one and love it) Its Diesel so different drive to the ULP Paj but still a mid size car. Reason I went for a Yota over another Paj was due to what was available on the market at the time - which do I prefer - to hard to answer as they are totally different vehicles. Would definately go Diesel again due to the low down gearing but then they aren't fast of the blocks so don't go planning on racing anyone (even chipped).
Would I go for a Lux or Runner or Narv - no only because i'm not into the 'ute' style and it doesn't suit my needs. Try them all and discount non - even the Terrican is basically a Paj drive train, the Landy's - well can't comment but mid size won't include the patrol or cruiser. Economy wise the mid sizes are reasonably similar - if they are looked after.

I have a soft spot for them, don't know what but they appeal to me ;)

but DONT BUY A LANDIE.

They have things like fluid couplings on clutches that will cost $3k plus to repair. Centre diff locks that you have to climb under the truck to engage :roll:

Electrical systems that after 8 years will ensure that when you turn the indicator on the horn blows instead and vice versa.

They are excellent rides but as soon as something breaks you will need a second mortgage to fix the bugger.

That said I LIKE LANDIES FOR SOME ODD REASON :D

The Prado is a well respected rig, maybe an early model RV6 or something like that.

yep all things aside i would buy a pajero if i was after something smooth,efficient and economical(diesel). I know of a few friends and relatives who have had them and if serviced and looked after right last forever.

The Pajero's seem to have a fairly good rep around this place, quite surprised. Im having a bit of a look at them but im starting to lean towards a styleside canopy ute.

Going to look at a few of the hilux and navaras tomorrow so will see what I come up with.

With the Prado, they look the same as a full size cruiser. Are people sure that these puppies are actually smaller then a landcruiser? I thougt the prado was just a different model. Like say a calais with the commodore series.

Prado's do look big but there is fark all room and they sem to be narrow and cramped inside, if it has 7 seats you cant fit anything bigger than a small backpack in the rear.

The Prado is just what Toyota Australia used to replace the 4Runner in 1996 and is only slightly bigger. But certainly smaller then a 80 or 100 series Landcruiser.

If you're going to look at Hiluxs around the N167/169 models as previously mentioned, this is just my experience with them.

Through work vehicles i have driven them with all available engines. I personally wouldn't consider the 2.7L 4cyl as a personal vehicle. It's gutless and heavy on fuel for the performance it gives in comparison to the 3.4L V6 which is only marginally worse on fuel. The V6 is so much easier to live with and drive with bucket loads more power and torque. For comparison i have a large hill i drive up every day, between the two, the 4cyl needed to be dropped back to 4th to get up doing the speed limit, the V6 would cruise over in 5th even with a loaded trailer on the back.

Same kind of comparison can be said with comparing a NA Diesel model to Turbo Diesel model.

Just my opinion, but of Hiluxs around the 2000 model range, go with a Turbo Diesel or V6 as first choice dependant on fuel type you want as first option.

But seeing as you're coming from a Feroza, the 4cyl petrol and NA diesel aren't that bad. You would be used to having to rev the engine and work the gearbox to get anywhere anyway. Neither of which are as bad as that and more forgiving when it comes to driving a bit lazy.

the only trouble with the hilux is it is a leaf spring rear,which for a family vehicle is a bit uncomfortable as is the back seat in the dual cabs. Any way you go you will be having fun and most japanese 4wd's are very well built... happy hunting.

yea but if your buying a proda to go touring with 7 people your pretty silly!! the 8 seats (including driver) are very handy when its being used as a family taxi to do the in town drop offs and pick ups!!

as a 5 seater they have a reasonable boot size, ad if you having problems, you have either to manny females or your packing like one!! :finger:

Im lookin at trading the feroza in tomorrow for a nice dual cab hilux, 03 model with about 80000km on it.Hopefully get it for a good price! Will let yas know how it goes.
