Hi all...Im seriously think about fitting a H150 box and transfere from an 80 series into a 79 series.Has anyone done it?can it be done?is it the exact same box and trans as the 79turbo diesels H150f box and transfere?

They look to be very similar dimensions to the 79 series turbo box but i dont Know if they are exactly the same.
Standard 79's have a very narrow transmission tunnel and getting the box in and out is a PITA. The turbo's have a different transmission tunnel but i dont know how much wider it is than normal.

I've been contemplating the same into a 75 series troopy but due to shifting houses the project has been on hold. I have an H150f sitting on the garage floor atm. From what I can see, the only major difference is the location of the transfer control. The 80 series transfer has its shifter on top, where as the 79 turbo diesel has its transfer controls next to the gearbox on the driver's side. I've bought parts for a petrol 75 series (FZJ75) that would allow me to relocate the shifter to the location but I have yet to install them.
From what I can see, the H151 gearbox that comes with a turbo diesel or a petrol 80 series do not seem to have the mounting bosses that would allow me to put the shifter in this location.

Can i just clarify a couple of things in your post:
Does the H150F have mounting bosses on the side for that FZJ75 transfer shifter?
Is the boss thats missing completely or is the boss blind, with no thread?
From the way I've interpreted your post, the only way to mate a H15X into a 75 series cruiser (without cutting holes in the floor) is to use a H150F with the FZJ75 transfer shifter components.
Out of interest (and because i'm planning this swap) i contacted toyota, the part numbers are different for the casing of a HDJ80 (H151F) and a HDJ79 (H150F) gearbox, although this isnt always a 100% indicator, it could confirm the differences with mount bosses.

why do u want to put in a 80 series box they have sincro isues and are a pain in the ass offraod as u nearly have to stop to change gears in low range.
grab a 75 series box they had no problems

The H151F and H150F gearboxes are a lot stronger than the H55F from a HZJ75.
They are a physically bigger box and dont have 5th gear hanging out the end like the H55F does
They also have an internal oil pump in the gearbox as well.
Theres probably other reasons that i cant think of but bottom line is they are supposed to be tougher.
Its my understanding that the early (pre 1993) H15x gearboxes had some synchro problems but thats the only problem that i know of???.

I was under the same impression too until I looked at an H151f I bought from dow50r's mate. It was from an FZJ80 but it also has the mounting bosses:

Guys shoot tobie a mail, he just did a h55 to h150 in a 75 series. had no problems making it fit, the 79 series turbo diesel is a h150...you will need a h150 from a dx wioth a part time transfer if you want to do the swap, transfers are different aswell...
Easy to find these boxes as they dont break, hense there are a few spares around, the later 93-98 models have better synchros.

Ive just made a few measurements of the lenght of my gearbox and transfere.From the front of the bellhouse[where it bolts to engine] to the fill plug on the transfere its about 830 mm..
From the front of bellhousing to the the flange that the rear tailshaft bolts to its about 915mm.
I need to know if the h150 will fit under the body of the 79series?.

If it doesnt, body lift. but it should, i dont think toyota make bodies for turbo and others for non...i think...dont quote me...that the box with no threaded bosses is a 3f h150 out of a 1990-92 80 series.
Im surprised to hear the 151 and 150 have different casing part numbers...they look thesame, and input shafts can be swapped to allow std clutch to stay...thats accross 150 and 151....the 151 be it petrol or t/d is thesame input shaft. However the 3f 150 is different to 151 and also to the diesel input on a 150...
