Whats your budget?
Is it mainly for on road or off?

22R responds well to exhaust work (extractors and free flowing 2.5" exaust, mandrel bent if you've got the $), there are cams available which give a mild increase in peak performance without sacrificing bottom end, or an EFI conversion gives good gains but is expensive. The 22R can also be turbo or supercharged with a mild boost, be prepared to spend up big though. the M series 6 cylinder engines are more or less bolt-in, but be prepared to spend time and cash getting everything set up for EFI. there are adaptors for every engine under the sun, GM and Ford V8's and 6 cylinder motors, the options are endless. you have to decide how much cash you're prepared to throw at it and whether you want to stick with the 22R or if you want to graduate to something more exciting.
how about a Chev 6.5 diesel turbo. yeah yeah.

mine's a diesel. and I run the factory air filter. there's no extra power to be had by fitting aftermarket filtration, just potentially poorer filtration and more induction noise. the toyota filters are washable in water and last up to 50k km.
I cammed a 22R once, then added EFI, it went pretty good until I drowned it. the little turbo diesel is quicker, quieter and far more efficient than the 22R ever was but neither of them are any good for towing, unless you're not in much of a hurry.
