MQ urgent question

Post by Turbo Tonka »

hey all me and my dad have just been building up his MQ shorty.we have put a ute cab on it,tray,SD33 turbo diesel etc.everything has been hooked back up properly as we can tell anyway.the starters, alternators etc we all changed over to the 24 volt ones off his old motor. Our problem now is with batteries saying fully charged it is getting cd player, glow plug light in dash but thats almost it,headlights, blinkers etc wont work,it wont start, just has nothing.Any ideas anyone?????? also how do you bleed a motor,do we have to do this to get it running as its been sitting dry???? thanks people[/img]

take the fuel filter off and fill it with diesel before you start hand pumping fuel through

to prime loosen the "priming nuts" on the top of the injection pump. Open the hand primer and start pumping. I drained mine dry shortly after I got it since it had 5yr old diesel in the tank. It took a while to get primed after new diesel but mostly that was due to leaky fuel lines.

If running 12v stuff in a 24v system you can have charging probs. The alt gets confused and over charges one batt while under charging the other. Perhaps this is the root of your problem.....

check to make sure your alternator is connected correctly and your interlinking cable is connected

if its right you should have 24 across 1 battery and 12 on the other

rmp&o is right bout the 12v gear (you gotta use a convertor) but i doubt its the cause of your dramas

thanks fellas, any more ideas would be good if they come to mind.Today we tried again with wiring ideas.it is running 12v at 1 battery 24v at the other.the brake lights wont work or headlights with batteries fully charged, but if you run them straight to battery its all ok.We poked around with a test light and it is getting power and earths at everything we tried. We used the 24v alt, starter, glowplugs and old 24v wiring loom with the new 12v turbo motor as we were told its ok to do so.it gets nothing when you hit the key to start but wen we ran a wire straight to starter it tried to wind over???????????????????????????? we will prime it when wiring works.Any info please all

There's a "fuel pump actuator" on the driverside of the motor, it is a little motor that will be afected by 12/24 vlt difference, If you didn't change the actuator with the glowplugs etc. that could be your prob.

this actuator you re talking about would be the piece we didnt change then.We ran the old standard cable from the n/a motor on the turbo motor.neways it started tonight by running direct from battery to starter motor, then it wouldnt turn off so i had to pull that cable (actuator you are talking about)then it stopped.scared me hey,dad wasnt there n i thought i was gonna wreck his truck.so does it need a new piece, cos they are different between the 2 engines hey????

Have a good look at the regulator. I had a number of 12v items running off the 24v system. It was very unreliable and I finally went to an invertor to sort things out.
