Weight reduction and pulley systems

Post by TuffRR »

Ok, for those who did physics in high school this is probably a very n00b question.

I have rigged up a pulley system in my garage to help fit and remove a roofrack. I have a beam running overhead and have attached everything to this. Using my l33t photoshop skills i have made the diagram below to try and represent how it is setup...

It seems that it hasn't reduced the effective load at all, ie anything hooked up to it still seems bloody heavy. For a pulley system to work, does the line have to run parallel to the load or can it run perpendicular like i have it?

Thanks.

it can run anyway up/down or sideways. We use a pulley system to hauls calves out the back of cows!

Friction may be you're enemy here. Are the pulleys good quality eg., marine type and not binding?. The same number of 'drops' you have here we used years ago to lift engines out.

You have halved the load with that setup. But pulleys three and four (starting at the roofrack) are doing nothing for you.
This is not legal advice.

Put 2 pulleys on Bar, 2 on roof and run between them.

Will work then

Awesome, thanks guys.

FYI, the pulleys are from a marine shop and its decent quality rope so there should not be too much resistance.
