i guess ur the 1st ever to ask for a compressed coil measurement while its under a vit.
i'm not sure why you would ask for that measurement, as it has to many variables to work off. position of spring on diff, or width of diff, or weight etc etc would play a part.
i can squash the spring to very near solid with no bump stop or shock in the back of my vit. i had to use a 1" coil spacer so it wouldnt bottom my shocks out. i then just left the stock bump stops in place.
well, next time i'm out, i will measure them for you.

gas shock are fine in a vitara you just have to use the right ones!!!!
ive got a set of IRS BMW E30 (KYB PART NO. 343184) rears in my girl friends car with a custom set of springs that i got from KING SPRINGS
as for the front i just used STD front shocks and made a 2in spacer that screwd on then welded it onto the shock.
then i got the bearing plate / strut plate pushed out the stud reversd the plate then weld new bolts. so when you look underneith the bonnet the majority of the plate sits underneith the chassis. and you gain another 2in of travel.
basliy i got a std shock with an extra 4in of travel!!!!

shocks are in the back, but the front use struts. same same i guess.
and if a stock strut has a 7" stroke, how do you get an extra 4" of travel out of it?

with the unsprung height & sprung height of the coils i can work out were the kerb height will be. and also see if the coils will keep captive on full extension.
EG - using your compressed height & with diffs on axle stands, then jacking the vehicle up to achieve the same messurment between coil mounting pads i can then see where the vehicle will sit. or very close
hard top sierra 950kg std then add vitara engine. i aussume it will be close to your soft top. well close enuf for a starting point
dropped into a local wrecker thur after work.found some coils close to your specs
celica ST141 (rear) 360mm with 10mm wire
and commordore sedan 350+mm 12mm wire
& wagon 355mm with 13-14mm wire with after market HD coils.
id agree with you on coil pad location & vehicle weight etc
but axle width wouldnt play a part in ride height.
im not after callapsed height under articulation
cheers daryl

i have lifted the car 3in so the shock shaft extends out of the shock body 3in, so if i put a 2in spacer on top of the shock shaft then weld it on.
then with the plate that the shock shaft slide into, push the 3 studs out flip it upside down then weld another 3 bolts in so the nuts still mont inside the engine bay.
the thickness of the plate is appox 2in so if its upside down the piston slides body into the shock body 2in.

i would say that would just move the travel range down to suit the 3" lift. so the total travel you had stock, you would still have now. no additional travel at all.coilylux wrote:this is on the front,SiKiD_01 wrote:is this on the front or on the back?coilylux wrote: basliy i got a std shock with an extra 4in of travel!!!!

it would be different if you replaced the front struts with some dobinson 50mm longer ones. then you would have 50mm/2" MORE travel.

i'm talking about the struts. what are you talking about?coilylux wrote:i had a set of dobo's in the car which i got from work.

struts and shocks do not lift the car or lower the car in any way. springs do that.
if you have dobinson STRUTS, they have 50mm longer stroke than factory ones! even OME only have a 30mm longer stroke.
as for 3" lift. get a calmini 3" lift kit from the states.
180 coils will definately not work in the front. for a rough idea, the rear springs on a swb vit are at 110lb/ft and the front ones are about 470lb/ft!

spacer... longer springs... either and/or both. most likely be looking at getting new springs made for up front if you don't want to put a big fat coil spacer in there.mroffroader wrote:yea so 180 coils go in the rear with of course longer shocks but what goes in the front to bring it up to the hight of the back?
+ you will have no down travel from the strut and will have to space that, and then you will have camber issues, poor cv angles. ride quality decreases, steering arms get steeper, steering is worse.

What about using 180 rears in the front of a Vit?SiKiD_01 wrote:if u mean using front 180 coils in the front of a vit, then no. front 180 coils have a humungous diameter, and only a few winds, like 5 or so. they are on the strut itself, so yeah, wont work.

due to the way the ifs is set up, the coil is halfway on the arm, and the spring rate required to hold the front end up is far greater than the back.
plus, the front has the weight of the motor.
but if you were to set up a SAS of sorts, you could use the 180 coils up front. they would not lift as much, and would be extremely soft.

also what yr gv to get springs from want to go pick up a set this week
also how hard is it to put all this in urself
cheers nick
i'm not sure about year models for the GV, as some came with a 4cyl and a 6cyl engine. obviously the 6cyl engine weighs more, so the springs will be stiffer again.
how hard? depends on: what tools you have; how many helpful mates; how many swaer words in your vocab; and how much common sense you have.
