Guys, what is the lightest V8 around.
If you have an idea, post it and if you have the specs eg, how much it weighs ect post that aswell.
Also (but not important) can it bolt up to hilux gearbox

got one even lighter than that, althou i have never seen one, suzuki apparntantly make a 1.8L V8. I personally think that the thing would be useless make next to no power and parts would be unavailable.
I would think that the lexus V8 would be light as it is all alloy aswell. It would be rather easy (for some of your know how) to fit. Castle main make a kit to bolt it to a supra 5speed. Marks make a kit to bolt the supra 5 speed to a toyota case, so alittle mis matching and your on your way.

Forget the 2 litre Toyota engine in favor of a Rover 3.5l V8 as it's 5 pounds lighter and way more powerful
Forget the Rover 3.5V8 in favor of a Mitsubishi 3.0l V6 as it's Japanese (this idea didn't last long )
Back to a Rover 3.5V8 as its cheaper, let alone much easier to find

The best way to go is the Leyland P76 donk, basically the same size/weight as a Rover but 4.4L, so the power to weight is up.
Theres one in a hilux here with an auto that got second in the latest winch challenge, sounded rather nice

fuel injected leyland p76 running rangie heads opened up to lower the comp a bit with a 3.9 injection manifold off a 2000 disco and custom made adpater blocks ( marks no longer make them toorak tractor in vic does) . Wolf 3D engine management system controls the lot pick the right stick and you have a stump puller .It will cost you some dollars thou not sure what it finally cost me in the end but it was over $4500 , well worth it thou .
Wouldnt bother with the P76 unless you are really keen. Fair bit of mucking around to put it all togther. Biggest job is to adapt the rangie inlet manifold so that you can run the rangie carbs (although somebody might make these now??)
Just get a healthy 3.5L - it will do everthing you need and they are cheap and easy.

They are very similar. The p76 has a taller block height (longer stroke) so the heads are further apart which is why the rangie manifold wont bolt on.
If you really needed big horsepower or your gearing was a bit marginal then it would be worth while getting a p76. But you have got plenty of gearing.
If you really had to buy a good one next week than I would say $1200 - $1500 will get one easily. But they are around for a lot less money than that. Like Mick said he got a whole car for $100.

you can get adpaters for the 4.4 to run the rangie manifold from toorak tractor around $300 the set only difference really betweena 4.4 and 3.5 or 3.9 is the torque levels all 3 will cost you around the $2000 mark to rebiuld the 4.4 will bolt striaght up to you rangie box (manual that is) i know where there is a fly wheel already mod for this all you need is to biuld the engine brackets . I have had both carbie and injected i love the injected goes well but carbs are easy to work with . Also if you pull about 3 to 4 Kg's off the fly wheel it makes all the diff when taking off . guess it depends what you want it for in the long run. Rangies are know to be on the thirsty side with the 4.4 and 35's i am averaging around 7K's a litre normal rangie will get around 4 -5 K's a litre .
OK i think the 3.5 is the go, now how much for an adaptor to suit hilux gearbox.
What other factors do i need to consider for this swap, eg upgrade the clutch plate or larger radiator ect.
The radiator is not to many dramas as i will probarbly mount it in the back (somewhere) so i can move my winch back and increase approach angle.

let us know how you go with the 3.5 stuff; bellhousing motor mounts etc. you are replacing a 3y? arent you. the 3.5 l motor is one of a few on the cards for me to replace my 4y-c with g52

They are an amazing carbed motor for running on angles. I have never ever had problems with mine running on any sort of angle and they way my gearing was a always stalled the motor and the thing would also start on any angle.
Must be the design of the carb setup??? Cause they work bloody well.

yes the rover might be a little lighter 34kg from the 2 posts here ( i have not looked it up so have no idea if these figures are correct but the lexus is 200Kw and already comes with EFI is a very smooth engine, if it wasnt a toyota engine it would be my pick.
can get plenty of cheap front cuts with all the parts for a lexus V8
There is a mob on the gold coast that puts them in a mazda mx5 and puts a blower on for even more fun

I would doubt that a lexus motor would produce as much torque as the rover 3.5 below 1000rpm and I would guarantee it would have way less torque below 500rpm. I betcha the lexus wouldnt even run at 300rpm. This is the sort of motor you need for crawlin and is why the rover motor is the best choice by far.
