What engine are you running HotFourOk ? Not that the problems with the location of the sensor - its the thermostat thats in a "strange" place. But have never seen a temp sensor anywhere but at the back of the cylinder head. If its in the thermostat housing as you say that's very wierd as your not actually measuring the temperature of the head ( motor ) rater the cooling water inlet temp - which is not really a great way on measuring engine temp.
Going by a conversation I had with an Applause owner on Daihard it would appear the Applauses have the water temp sender in the thermostat housing (ie. lower radiator hose.)
I guess that's a good way to give the driver a "warm fuzzy feeling" about the engine coolant temp, but in reality the reading is next to useless!

I think HotFourOk is probably refering to the temp sender for the glow plug timer (DL diesel motor) which is located in the lower thermostat housing. The actual temp gauge sender is in the front of the head, just below and to the driverside of the thermostat housing. It measures the temp of the water just as its leaving the engine so it's probably in the best possible location.MightyMouse wrote:What engine are you running HotFourOk ? Regarding the thermostat in the lower hose, i think it's more common than you think. I had a feeling the 4.5l petrol cruiser has a similar arrangment. The 1HZ diesel might do too actually. I know it has the thermostat housing halfway down the side of the block.
Not saying that it is a good idea, but it must work ok. I mean how many cruisers are there getting around....
But... I could be wrong.

Rang up my "problem" Toyota dealer today after a genuine thermostat (it's that time of year again.....) and was pleasantly surprised - THEY WANTED TO HELP ME!!!
Thermostat - $54 (ouch) but was expecting that. Also priced a waterpump and was surprised to find it's only $101 genuine! Supposedly 5 days to get it in from Sydney.
