383 stroker, what should I run? Factory 5 speed or T700r

Post by Artificial_Aspiration »

I've got a GQ SWB and have just finished building a Torque Monster 383 Chev, 10.5:1 compression (straight LPG), head work (ss valves hard seats & porting), balanced bottom end, a high torque cam shaft, and a few other goddies

Now I'm up to the last peice of the puzzle, What should I run? A Factory 5 speed manual with one of Marks Adaptors Kits or run a T700r 4 speed automatic with one of Marks transfer kits? Tyres are 33 and running 4.11 diffs.

Let me know on your thoughts?

It was always going to be a V8, I started building the chev 12 months ago, I just wanted to see how the TB42 would react to the Turbo and LPG before I pulled the motor out( it loved it). I have built a few Chevy's over the years and my plan for my swb was always going a 383. You can not beat the low down torque made by stroker with heaps of Cubic Inches! Vortec 350 bored .040 equals 385 cu in or for the young fellas 6.3L ;)

G'day Bud

I have a similar set up in my MQ, The vortec heads you have will be a better match than the ported double hump Fuelies I have, but basically the same at the end of the day..
Can I mention get some tuned port extractors with twin 3in Mufflers (at the end of 3in secondary pipe) and straight down to the rear diff then a single 3in into a little round muffler then out back with a dump pipe, Nice sound... But not loud..(well thats wht I have anyway)

I have mine on straight LPG and I have always been UN HAPPY with how hard my engine goes... I think its a dog..
The LPG really does not suit it... Unless you are going twin EVERY thing, a twin 425 impco carbys on a tunnel ram works OK and a set of twin gas research will also work ok, BUT dont think you are going to hit 300hp with a single carb and convertor, I dought LPG will get any more...
Unless its turbo...(with a single that is)

I reckon ON Premium unleaded fuel MY car would be a handfull to drive, i think it would KICk ass, just LPG sux man, 3500 - 4000 rpm and there is NO MORE POWER, and dont think your tourque curve will be anything great either...

As for your gear box, well that is your own opinion, but if I was to do another V8 chev, I would go the T700 box and get it upgraded and kitted..

THE biggest problem with this setup and the BIG V8 will be the stall convertor RPM, I dought you will be anything under 2500, so that puts your 4x4ing out the door, but just think how high the front wheels will lift at the lights, lol....

Anyway, the reason I would go the T700 is because it is a stronger in the way the drive line sits behind, If you go the Adapter and 5 speed box, it will have a bigger flywheel and an extended input shaft (possible- Depends on the kit) but most kits will require an extension.... There is 2 week points to start with, and when you want TORQUE you will want strenght...

well thats my thoughts anyway...
