4.2 Diesel Life Expectancy?
4.2 Diesel Life Expectancy?
Ok
One of my grand dads mates has owned a DX patrol with 4.2 diesel since new, the rig has had all services carried out by professionals and hasn't missed a beat.
He is getting older now and past his touring stage and wants to get rid of it, it has 350,000 on the motor now.
How long can i expect the motor to last granted its service history and has never been thrased?
can i expect another 100,000 at least?
cause depending on price i might get it, it is a wagon btw

Mines got nearly 300k klms and seems happy.
Nick W on patrol list has 530,000klms on his 89model, and no problems good 5000klm servicing since new helps...
He removed the head to check it out as he has the bits to rebuild it, and put the head back on adn the rebuild kit back on the shelf until later!

On the topic of old TD42's what would need to be done to a motor that has done just over 400k if the life expectancy is somewhere between 500/600, Fitting a turbo with out doing any other work I’m sure is going to break something quickly.
Also would I be looking at for a full rebuild ($4k) + turbo ($4k) ??
Any suggestions.
Sorry to highjack your thread, but you might be interested in the response anyways.

I priced PIstons, rings, big ends, and gaskets the other day, that was for a TB42, that was around $1800, diesel is more than that.. So add labour, machining, etc.
You would be keen to add a snail to one with 400,000 on it. Look at it, $8k for rebuild and snail, you could go a Chev conversion for bit more.

Chev conversion is a bit more, but the add'd bonus with a TD42+Snail will mean local parts when something goes wrong, and hopefully more then 200,000k's before a another rebuild
I’m sure there is good and bad with both and could start a whole new thread on this if it hasn’t been done already.
On the topic of rebuilding, if it has been done well, would you expect to get the same life expectancy? 400,000 +
How much add'd stress, inurn decreasing the life expectance on a New/Rebuilt TD42 would you get from adding a turbo.
Does the turbo tend to decrees the life at all?

No GQ TD42 came with a turbo.
The GU with turbo runs around 12psi from memory.
I was led to beleive (as advised by Glen Binskin) that the TD42 is a small truck engine that was designed to run with a turbo.
