What part carked it? If it was only bearings and brushes it costs less than $30 for the parts and about 30 minutes to rebuild you might just need a impact driver to loosen the long screws that hold the 2 halfs together.
If you have been mudding I bet its just the bearings and bushes

If you dont have panel damage you ain't trying hard enough
What is a FULL rebuild I have the bearing kit sitting on my coffee table and you just get the biggest brushes you can get and file them to size I was giving a 30 dollar qoute on getting the parts from a auto electrician if you get the brushes of an auto lecy they still only cost about $3 dollars each and to get the bearing from a bearing shop it will probably cost you $6.
What I suggest is that for the first time you take the bearings out and take them in to a bearing shop as the 4y has 2 different alternators the only difference being the bearing sizes(one is a bosch the other some jap brand) if you get it from a wrecker the 4y was in heaps of cars,forklifts,vans,4wds infact I would reckon there is more 4ys out there than commys. A commy alternator is not going to be any more water/mud resistant than the one that came out of his rig.
If he aint had battery charging problems whats the point
If you lived on the central coast I would show you how its done
This kid is a sparky let him use his skills

Thats if you get it from your local auto lecy. If you take it appart and then get the bit from abearing shop its cheaper again you can have a rebuild kit in your glove box.flynn wrote:$30 sweet i was thinking in the couple of hundreds....

You might need a rattle gun to take off the pulley if you dont have one try loosening it first by pressing on the belt if that fails when you split it put the centre in a vice (with timber to protect it) you need this end off to get to the front bearing which is lightly pressed on if you have a bearing puller use it if not 2 big screw drivers when you put it back on get a block of 4x2 and drill a hole in it for the shaft put the bearing on and tap till in place.
The rear is held by a plate its unscrew 3 screws and pull out put new one in
When you do the brushes there is a hole in the alternator back plate that lines up with the brush plate put a piece of wire in here to hold the brushes back fron the shaft while putting it back together. Just remember where all the insulating bits go I am preety sure you can only do it one way.
Good luck and any questions just ask

It aint worth gettin it rewound as one from the wrecker will cost you $50 to $70 dollars the 4Y is in toyata forklifts, camrys(old),Toragos (old. bolt on manifold fuel injection if the stall factor on hills gets you),Hiace thats all I have found out about but great little engines as a new one from sump to rocker cover will cost anywhere between $1000 and $1600 and they love getting thrashed
