Hi,
I am planning to turbocharge my gq 4.2d.
what garrett turbocharger i have to use?i want power at low,mid and high revs.
what must i take in account when building the turbo manifold?
can i retain the standard exhaust?
what other parts do i need to complete the whole conversion?
what size of air to air i/c must i build to fit in front of the car and retain the a/c and not do too many mods?
i am not building the car for racing purposes, so i dont want a noisy exhaust.
how many kws can i achieve with this conversion(with std fuel pump and injectors)?

This sort of question can't be answered to easily...
depending on how much fabrication you want to do you may only need to purchase a turbo and some steel, the cut bend and weld till your hearts content, but if you want to save work then you'll spend money.
the basics of a kit are;
turbo
exhaust maniflod/inlet manifold
oil supply and drian linesthat's pretty much a basic, cheap as chips kit( price's vary depanding on avail. brand etc. etc.
If it's a budget build up, I would source manifolds and turbo from a blown motor, get turbo checked out and cleaned up. bolt the manifolds on and build from there. all the info for a TD42 turbo conversion is here, it may take some time but use the search as it is all here. You may even find little tips and tech. that make the job alot quicker and easier.

Get onto MTQ engine systems , they do a low mount manifold new for about $380. Then onto Ebay for a cheap chinese turbo T3/T4 suit skyline, or a second hand skyline turbo off RB25DET. Make a cross over pipe and oil lines and turn the fuel pmp up. You won't need to intercool it if you stay at 8-10 psi. Whole set up would be under a grand.
Thanks zook. The manifold you mention, is that the inlet one and does that allow you to keep your standard exhaust manifold? Crossover pipe? Where does it crossover from? Skylines are sometimes in breakers here.

irshad, you are asking for the impossible - it is not possible to have the best of all worlds - choose, either power at low revs tapering off mid-high, medium revs tapering off high with no low end power, or high power only with no low to mid. The reason for this is that a turbocharger is only designed to operate efficiently in a particular load / flow band. You need to choose what is most important to you depending on the vehicles use, then match a turbocharger accordingly.
A BB turbo will give you a slightly wider band. A Garrett BB350+ will give you some semblence of reasonable performance in a wider band, otherwise a GT35R or GT42R are adequately matched.
In terms of parts:
- Turbo
- Exhaust manifold
- Dump pipe
- Exhaust system
- Wastegate
- Intake pipe from aircleaner to compressor snout
- Inlet crossover pipe
- Adapters for coolant and oil lines
- Hoses for coolant and oil (preferably braided w/JIC type fittings)
- Boost gauge & EGT gauge are optional, but highly recommended if you go playing with your own fuel settings
FMIC is not necessary and extraordinarily difficult to install (at least way beyond my level of motivation) - there is not a lot of space available forward of the A/C condensor
TMIC is also not necessary but a lot simpler to install
The turbocharger compressor and wastegate has it's own muffling effect, so effectively you can run no muffler and still have something that's reasonably quiet - even with a straight through muffler it's only slightly louder than factory.
How many kW is quite a complex question - most kit manufacturers quote around the 130fwkw mark and 350 odd nM of torque @ around 8psi boost. I would suggest that this figure is around the maximum safe power level achievable without risking damaging EGT levels - this is set by fuel and boost. If you wind more fuel and boost into it, you can achieve greater power levels - but if post-turbo EGT's rise above above 500degC you will cause youself all sorts of headaches.

Depends on your budjet but seeing that your not wanting a race but since you would like low down responsive turbo, you wont find one off the shelf.
I have been around alot of the comp cars high powered diesel that get around and seen many different turbo setups, with and without intercoolers and pump mods.
Sandy bowman has his own custom turbo which i rate very highly boost up quickly and pulls through the gears. I have driven vehicle that has had the pump done and no pump and must admit the one without the pump was very nice to drive. It did have a 4" snorkle and front mount intercooler and custom manifold but it was very nice vehicle to drive.
Dont ask specs on the turbo as I dont know and I wouldnt bother asking sandy either as he did all the R&D for the setup. But with the setup as mentioned above which is std pump and injectors you should achieve about 120 ish kw thats max you can achieve as its running out of fuel.
If you want a quiet vehicle run mufflers but to be honest its not that loud i.e. dronning noise.

GT25 or GT30 Garret, TD05H mitsubishi turbo. Roller bearings need water and oil cooling, Journal bearings not so much. Theres a world of different internal parts, turbines etc which I'm still learning about.
Overhead intercooler can suffer from heat soak, front mounts are better. Water cooled are meant to be the bees Knees, unless they split...not so good for TDs. You can plum oil from the engine from existing holes and run it back to the sump which will require drilling a hole etc.
This is what I have picked up so far, but still don't feel I know enough to do just yet.

Im also very impressed by this setup above! Im extreamly happy with mine and i am not running four inch snorkle yet either. Lots of little differences can be made over time. My advice would be to spend money on a good turbo and manifold an slowly build up the rest when u can. U can always put more fuel into when u add cooler, bigger exaust or bigger airbox etc.

Hey Steve - blow me
I was suggesting he may want to speak to the other 7 diesel patrol drivers there - 4 of whom have done a pretty similar set up to what this gent wants, and 1 who is currently in the process of building 1 up.
The dyno report was just something of interest - thats all.
Anyhow, I guess I'll 'keep my crap' to myself - cause heaven forbid I might suggest something useful After all - its not like he really needs any more detailed assistance now that he has your rather undescriptive and blasé description of your killer turbo

lexi if i were you you id do some research into denco turbo kits, as they use schwitzer turbos.
you may find the ones they use are common fitment on something in the uk as schwitzer is probably the most common turbo on diesels over there.
and for the price of importing a manifold i recon your local exhaust shop could make up a custom one for you.
