Alternaror repairs
My alternator on the middy has given up, so i pulled it from the vehicle today and then pulled it apart. all looks pretty good, going to auto elec to try to get new bruches and bearing, but want to now what is best for cleaning all the parts?
basically alternator was full of dried mud so i want to clean everything including stator and rotaor windings. would metho and toothbrush be best or something else?
cheers

cleaning alternator
well if its in bits you can degrease it and pressure wash it then just blow dry it with air gun
or if you have access to a parts washer through it in there as well

will let you know how this works
i replaced the brushes and the bearing today. got these at local auto elec who also got pulley off the front and pressed out the rotor, all for $18. bargain. cleaned everything up either turps/toothbrush/small wire brush on advice from auto elec that turps would be ok. dried everything out with air gun. so know i've got to get it back in the car which will be a real pita, then check that it charges.
was heaps of mud in there, so many holes to get in. will look into mounting some sort of splash guard on the other cruiser as this is planned to be sold.
hey phippsy, did you have a charging problem or was yours preventative maintenance?

well, same here. alternator is in and working great now, but had to change the regulator too. had 2 regs, one was overcharging batteries, over 16.4v, another that would only put out 12.3v. this was with adjustable regulators tooNCpaj wrote:i did the same thing as phippsy wit hthe toothbrush and the water, mine alt was stuffed.

Was not charging properly. Took it the auto lecky we send our work trucks to, he had it for a day after telling him it needed brushes. Went to pick it up thinking it was right only to be told, "yeah we tested it, it's not charging right, won't be the brushes though, a new one is $500, that'll be $38 for the testing" Went off after he told me it wasn't the brushes and what the fark did he expect me to pay for when I already told him it wasn't working. All this on a Friday arvo. Got it out on Saturday, brushes were at the end of their life. Cleaned it up, $4 for new brushes on Monday, all back together Monday night.
That was a couple of months ago now and it hasn't missed a beat.
