So went looking at Hilux's today...
Drove heaps and have found a couple in my price range with the right KM's..
The turbo diesels are out of my range unfortunatly.. so ..
of the 2 engines listed above (3.0 NA diesel / 2.7 efi petrol) which would you choose and why ??
Just for general touring, dd, camping trips etc..
What is the longevity of these 2 engines like ??

Having had both as work vehicles. I would take the Diesel. You can kind of forgive it for being gutless because it's a diesel, gives around a good 100km out of a tank aswell. Somewhat more realxing to drive, can just cruise along, the petrol needs more effort to drive once loaded and in hills on the highway, the diesel just chuggs along, although a little bit slower. Diesel performed better on "shortcuts" home aswell
My first work vehicle with either of these engines was a Diesel and it got to 275000km with irregular servicing from day one (anywhere from 10k-15k intervals and not 5k) and was still going strong. One guy managed 27k between a service, although that service it was towed to the Dealership for an engine replacement So if has a good service history, can't see why they wouldn't get big km's.
I just hated the 2.7L from the start, may have just been a lemon as it always felt like a piece of shit, much prefer the 3.4 V6 i have in it's place at the moment. In a little bit of fairness though, the 2.7L had an XL workbody on the back where as the diesels had trays and toolboxes, so was always heavier. But i still hated it, the XL body was the only thing i liked about it.
Guess it comes down to wether you want a Petrol or a Diesel, but i always preferred the diesel between the two options given.

The petrol has a nice aluminium canopy thingo on the back of the single cab.. and the diesel is a dual cab..
Both have excellent dealer service history..
Will have to go take another drive I reckon and make a final decision..

Id go a 3.0D, better life expectancy, u could go a sensible backyard turbo install for around $1500 and it would out power/perform/live the 2.7l, and its power (NA?A and Turbo) would be nice and low (rpm), in the perfect range for touring/offroad.
Dual cab - little bit extra room for youngins, keeping gear dry, can pull rear seats out and make up draw system to keep fridge safe/clean/cooler etc etc..

The 2.7 is a good motor. It's a little small but it won't ever stop. A bloke at work drives one and has never had any dramas with it. Servicing is cheaper, petrol cheaper, didn't even use a whole lot more than my diesel after 10days on Fraser Island. You were right it does come down to the rest of the car's gear to help make the right choice.
yeah I would be doing that anyway..
bloke down the road at exhaust place is pretty good with the bender and is cheap to.. may get him to do a nice free flowing system.. will take a look at the airbox and see how it can be improved...
High flow filters I am not keen on after reading some very poor filtration lab results from some well KnowN brands
