Wheel bearing locking nuts
Wheel bearing locking nuts
ive read the GQ locking nuts have a habit of undoing themselves. Ive been having a few issues lately with it, getting them repacked and coming undone in 2 weeks. Is this true? and is there some aftermarket ones i can out in to eliminate the problem?
cheers,
cheers,
GU locknuts will solve your problem, but if they are coming undone, there is something else not right, are you using the knock over washer at the end?

Thanks for the replies yep ive heard about the GU locking nuts, im thinking that my be the go. People are saying they've had no problems whatsoever after doing that.
I havent personally had a look in there. See this is the thing, i got my car serviced a while back and got the front bearings done while it was there (just boiught the car abd they needed replacing) anyway, all good up untill about 3 weeks ago when they carcked it. Took it back and got it done for free, then two weeks later they screwed up again and once again took it back and they're already loose (or the mech didnt even take the wheel off - my bets on that ) so i dont know wether it's just been bodgy work done or theres somethiong else wrong.

This is gonna sound stupid i know, but how do you adjust them and bend the lock tab over?Robbo wrote:You don't need to remove the wheel to adjust but i bet he forgot to bend over the lock tab. The old saying if you want it done properly bla bla
i have no idea with stuff like this
And yes i know if you want it done properly do it yourself

The access to the bearing nut with auto hub removed isn't any better with the wheel removed. If you change to GU lock rings tighten the inner one to 40 lbs with tention wrench. (you will have to make yourself a tool with socket drive to fit wrench) I run 36" tyres & no bearing probs.
if you want it done properly do it yourself
Well i just took it a to a mech after work today and booked it in for friday. Other stuff needs doing aswell so i thought i'd get it done in one hit so it's over with plus i just dont have the time nor know how to do it myself . Gettin some GU locking nuts put in, brakes fixed and a mysterious noise fixed, all the stuff my previous mech to fix but didint

there is another ring on top of this 1 that locks into the keyway and has holes that you put a screw through into the pictured tapped holes.

2 pieces from nissan came to about $11 a side for me (might have been trade price though?), plus the 4 m3 or m2.5 screws were free from work

i need help!
I did this to my 95 patrol after, getting play in my bearings, But still if i do a couple of thou km's they wheels will get play in them. i can't work it out. i'm confident that the lockring/washer has plenty of tightness on it too.
Bearings are about 3 months old, and still in good condition.
is there something i'm missing here??? any ideas? its driving me insane!

This GQ locking system looks identical to the MQ system so presumably the GU locknut arrangement will fit the MQ also. This would answer the question I posed on a separate post. Can anyone confirm this and does anyone know the GU part nos? Unfortunately my local Nissan agent has new staff in the parts dept who would not know what I was talking about - they did not even know there was a Model 160 Patrol (the MQ) until I leaned over the counter and pulled out the Parts Book for it
Looking at BigMav's photo of the old system I notice that the inner tab which fits in the groove on the axle housing has sheared. This is a common problem (at least for me) and I have yet to devise a way of preventing it happening when tightening the outer nut. Any suggestions?
Without the tab the lock washer is effectively useless. This might be the cause of slowLux's problem. When I do my bearings I make a mark on the lockwasher so I can tell if it moves when I tighten the outer nut. I have just replaced the bearings and went through three new washers before the 4th one gripped. The care I take over this may be the reason why I have never had the locknuts loosen in 25 years even on the LHS where the rotation of the wheel acts to loosen them.

You need the following
NI-40262-02J00 1 PER SIDE - NUT LOCK, FRONT WHEEL
NI-40264-02J10 1 PER SIDE - WASHER, FRONT WHEEL BEARING
NI-01414-00051 2 PER SIDE - BOLTS
This was passed on to me by mk patrol guy , whom got it from bogged so its only fair that I pass it on to. It may yet become a outer limits Nissan heirloom
The numbers were all right a week ago when I got my gear. Unfortunately it cost me $55 all up by my local rip off Nissan dealer.

theres a GU and GQ Parts # thread here which would have been handy to have kept as a stickymattsluxtruck wrote:You need the following

Yep thats a good point. I have only put the standard Nissan ones into mine at the moment and I could feel the heads of the screws getting a bit funky when I did them up.nastytroll wrote:bolts are M4 ISO *mm long the standard nissan parts are a cheese head screw, I would recoment either bolts or socket head cap screws as the cheese head screws strip the drive out of them easy
I will be changing mine over to socket heads when they are apart again.
Thanks for that. Have ordered a set from Nissan (ex Japan) but the number you inherited from MK Patrol Guy for the "NUT LOCK, FRONT WHEEL" (02J00) didn't show up on the Nissan computer. The others checked out OK but the guy didn't know what a GU was so couldn't look up the exploded diagram on his computer to find out. After consulting a "History of Nissan" chart on the wall (I kid you not) I told him to try Patrol Model Y61. This seemed to work and we found the number should be NI-40262-02J10. At least I hope so! Parts Books are a lot simpler to use than computers.mattsluxtruck wrote:You need the following

And thanks, Nastytroll, for the bolt size and suggestion.
So if these don't fit my MQ there will be some cheap parts for sale here.

I picked up the new locknuts from Nissan today and the numbers are as shown below
Note that both parts are 02J10
And yes they do fit my MQ stub axle except that the lockwasher has two tabs rather than the original one. So either I have to remove one or, preferably, have a second keyway cut in the stub axle. See picture with the round nut in place
Cost for two sets ex Japan including screws was $NZ45 approx
