pinion seal issues

about 4 months after converting to part time (80s lc) i noticed the rear pinion seal leaking. had it replaced about 4 weeks ago at noosa and asked then if i should do the front as well and he said no as its now hardly used. i was pressed for time so didnt argue and now.....

the rear is pinion is having a good old leak and the front does as well now when in 4wd. im wondering if the airlockers could have contributed to this in anyway before i get them done again.

if its not the lockers could unis on there way out put extra pressure on the seals or is it something further behind tjhe seals thats causing this?

im in mt isa at the moment if you have any recomendations for repairers.

Pinion bearing wear?

Uni joint wear and vibration?

Seal damaged upon installation (it happens)

Excessive diff heat cooking seals? (got the right oil in?/lockers installed correctly/alignment with pinion shaft correct?)

Pinion flange worn?

That's all I can think of for now

perhaps the flange that the seal runs on is worn out.

Are you using genuine seals? i went thru three aftermarket seals before using a toyota one and its never leaked since.

1. Check breather is open to the atmosphere, extend and fit a small petrol or air filter.
1. Use speedy sleeve on flange if worn

i had problems untill i got rid of the stupid crush sleve behind the pinion bearing and made a solid spacer. now it's perfect.

What does the crush sleeve do?

What does the crush sleeve do?

Used to help set the pinion bearing pre-load. As you tighten the pinion nut, the crush sleve crushes up (it goes on the pinion shaft inside the differential). Once its been crushed a few times its no good and must be replaced. So if you have un-done your pinion nut a few times then cranked it back up tight, then its possibly crushed to far. if there is damage to the pinion flange from the deal, like a groove, just fit a speedy sleeve.

cheers guys i will ask the mechanic about all these things when i get to on. i feel lay8on may be onto something though as both ends have been apart about 3 times.

im still not sure if the lockers could have caused this in anyway though ???
