Building a Comp Lux
So im thinking of getting out of drifting and getting into comp 4x4 or at least serious 4x4ing. So ive settled on probally building a Lux ute (based on parts availability etc) although still open to suggestions. Ideally I want it to be ultra reliable, If I have to fork out for stuff then so be it, as long as its reliable and will do the job without replacing crap all the time. Motivation I am thinking of using the engine out of my drift car, its a 1JZGTE twin turbo 2.5l six, tough as nails internally and atm is putting out 335hp at the rear wheels with minimal mods. Turbos are mounted higher than normal, but my concern lays with water, mud and dust affecting the setup. Plan to run a snorkel regardless so filtering shouldnt be an issue there, however plan to run a front mount intercooler setup (no wanky truck style ones) but would obviously need to protect it. They run a tough 5 speed box, however im at a loss as to how I would go around connecting the engine to current box setup in the hilux without getting a custom bellhousing made up, or alternativly how to get the r154 off the back of the 1J to mate up. Intend on running a internal cage at very least and quite possibly a exo cage as well. Suggestions on suspension to utilise diffs to use etc etc is most welcome.

mate where do you start when it comes to choice's. with all things when it comes to cars opinions are like a$$holes everybody got one,but every a$$hole gives there opinion weather you what it or not. Best bet is try to watch as many trucks as possible and see if they handle the way you intend to use yours for. most of the guys running good comp trucks will gladly help you with any questions you have about there vechiles. ive been lucky that i have had access to a couple of different suspension setups,from leafs,airbags and coils. Iam now changing mine to hydraulic coil overs(personal preference,who needs a house anyway!)similar to chads. If it's purely off road, not registered go links and hydraulic or similar. With regard to your engine where does it make the power, I'm assuming being twin turbo it make good power throughout the range but most of what you'll want is down low torque. If you go the exo, which you will if you don't want to buy endless panels, you won't want the internal, depending on what comps you enter though you may need it.
Yeah makes good power from 2500rpm up to redline, good tourque curve. Will be solely and wholey a tow around job, do it to the race car now so not fussed with having to do it with a 4wd cept at least with the 4wd I will have no worries about smashing the front bar etc driving it on lol. Id prefer to have the internal as well if nothing for my own concerns, I dont mind spending the extra money. ever thaught to put in somthing live a commo V6 which can be had cheap and you can buy addaptors.. with a supercharger you have sme kick and you can flog the shit out of it.....cheap..
are you wanting to run auto or manual...auto easier for crawling and so on

Drift car will either be stripped and parts used or sold or shoved away in the garage for the odd occasion out. I have thought about an V6 or V8 conversion, seeing as its not being used for road use, what would be the better option, auto or manual? I want to be able to get up decent hills etc etc so need a good all rounder.

as for setup of suspension you should do your homework and let us know what you want to get out of the hilux.(type of events you are looking at doing)
In any case at some stage there will have to be somthing custom made or purchased to have a hilux in the same sentence as reliable.
one of the most frustrating things about a comp rig is the amount of time spent fixing and modifing weak parts, so give your self a head start and build it strong from the start it makes a comp day more fun!
