I've spent the last 10 years or so scratching my way around and across Oz on motorbikes, but now I want to settle into something a bit more comfy for my treks through the outback!! I like Landcruiser Utes but want to know from the experts (you guys!!) what I should keep my eyes open for as far as common Landcruiser problems, etc. Do they have any common faults or are they so good that it's just standard wear and tear I need to be aware of? I would appreciate all advice given. Thanks a lot.
Probably be better to tell everyone which model you are referring it. In other words how old a landcruiser are you talking about. Also are you considering diesel or petrol?
Fifth gear will whine if it's done alot of highway k's - otherwise they're a pretty solid truck. Look for rust in the bottoms of the doors, footwells and windscreen frame.
If rust is the main concern, it sounds like the 75 series is a pretty tough truck.
How many k's do you reckon is too much for a 4.2L diesel. There's plenty between 200k to 300k. The big diesel be OK after that many k's wouldn't it?
And if the gearbox whines, is that bad news financially or is it just annoying? How much do you reckon a gearbox re-co costs?
The life of an engine comes down to servicing/care. plenty will live to 500k+ without being opened, others will die at 250k. If i were going to buy one that had done over 250, i'd want to have $6k available just in case.
Gearbox will be expensive to rebuild/replace ($3000+ iirc). Depends how bad it is as to whether it'll live. If you keep it out of 5th under heavy load it shouldn't be too much of a problem!
look for ones that have full service records with high k's, don't be to woried about the gearbox wine my gearbos started wineing 175000 but its just a noise there is no metal fragments in the oil check for that aswell
At the moment I am just looking at Carpoint and Carsales to get an idea of what they're worth. Some are fairly beat up and cheap and some are asking 18-19k.
