Hilux Diff Breathers Extension

When extending diff breathers to a 98 hilux, do you need to replace the orriginal breathers with a new barbed fitting or can you just connect the breather hose over the top of the original breather?

Also, do the original breathers unscrew?

The original ones unscrew and a 1/8" BSP barb screws right in.

i took the cap off my breathers,ran my hose and then put another set of hilux breathers on top,i dont rate it much,but it worked.

Does anyone know where is the best place to get the fittings in Brisbane?

From what I have read about 7m of 1/4" fuel line, a small petrol filter, some clamps and a T piece will finish the job.

The problem with the standard breathers is that they are designed to suck shut when you go into water from the diff cooling.
This may cause a vacuum in the diff causing water entry around seals.
Better to chuck a small inline fuel filter up top.

Harvey Hose at Salisbury, Industrial Fittings at Rocklea. Bunnings may but I wouldn't hold your breath on them having 'em. Pirtek or any hose making place should have them.

A Nissan diff breather that is just a 10mm hose barb screwed into the front and rear breathers on my 2003 LN166R Hilux with no drama and then I ran some fuel line high up in my engine bay. Nissan part # 38323-C6010.

Got the part # from a couple of American sites and then had a local Nissan dealer pull up the part # and diagram to see if the American part # corresponded to Int'l vehicles and it did.

The Nissan barb has a significantly smaller internal diameter than the stock Hilux breather but the water in my part of the world isn't cold so it shouldn't be a problem for me when I dunk my diffs.

I just picked up the parts for my 4Runner front and rear breathers from Enzed Silverwater about 20 minutes ago.

2 x 1/8 BSB barbs, hose clamps and 6 metres of good quality hose just over $30.00 (could have got cheaper hose).
