40 series engines and gearboxes

Post by ozy1 »

need help guys, one of our fellow club guys bought a 40 series a while ago, and its had an engine swap done, but we are not sure what it what,

is there any hidden details like engine numbers combos that would identify the engine?

are there any number on the gear box/transfewr that can identify them as we have a blown transfer we need to replace,

all help much appreciated,

EDIT,

there is a casting number towards the bottom ob the block not sure if this will help id it or not, 68010 also its an aug 82 model motor, but its a 79 model 40

if its a 5spd its probbaly a h55f.. with a split transfer case,, if its 4spd it could have a different transfer (h41?)

i got my transfer rebuilt a while back for about $1700 if you wanna know what it might cost.. (ive got a h55f)

where's the handbrake (on the rear of the T case or on the rear axle). if it's a 4 speed it's a H41) if it's a 5 speed it'll be a h55F. the 4 speeds did come with split cases later on in the picture.

the 40 is running 60 series diffs, and is running the handbrake in the drums,

there is no handbrake drum on the transfer, but i think it may have been removed casue it was not needed,

any other way to tell thesae two apart?

if it is the h55f, will a transfer case from a 4 speed 60 series bolt up?

there is, but i got no clue how to describe it

if it's an early h55f (i think pre 1989) it'll bolt up, if it's later, the gearbox output shaft has a different spline count.

i can't see them going to all the trouble of removing the handbrake drum (and replacing it with what?) considering it's what the rear driveshaft bolts to, and is integral in sealing the back of the case. i'd say you've got a split case.
