33's on 80s with no lift

Mates wagon not mine:

Will 33x12.5x15 tyres rub anywhere on a stocko 80 series with standard suspension?

A tyre dealer told him 35's will fit without any suspension lift

We tried a 33 on the front using the standard 80's 15x7 rim (chrome one) and drove up a truck ramp on full lock and until the bump stop was compressing and it looks like it will clear everything.

But off road things can be a little more different so we're wondering if it's ok. He's worried about wrecking his factory flares.

Also should 12.5" wide tyre go on an 8" rim, not a 7"?

I reckon they will be fine, need to be on an 8 inch rim and reckon trees will do more damage to his flares than his tyres. A cheap option for lifting it a tad is coil spacers.

Mate, they wont rub while ever he stays on the black top, but once he gets some articulation happening, they will rip his flares/flaps off....
He needs 2-4 inches of lift to run them well in the bush....the easiest way to run them would be to put body blocks in and raise the body 50mm, aswell as a set of springs that are 50mm lifted...they are everywhere for sale, and actually do a great job overall....ie they shit on std suspension...

MYTUFF, is your "I reckon" from real life experience or just that: "I reckon"? Dont want to chance it but coil spacers wouldn't change the upward travel of the front axle would it, unless longer bump stops are fitted?

dow50r, I should have mentioned he doesn't want to lift it (tight arse $$) thats why we're asking if they'll rub.

I suggested 33 x (11.5 or 10.5) x 15 on his current stock rims which are the chromed steel 15 x 7's.

He's main use is bush tracks and beach work, nothing majorly "flexing" but we're trying to talk him into it

I would say 33's should be fine..

we put my old 35's on a mates 80 with no lift and they only jsut touched wen turing and artic'ing at the same time

In the early days of the 80 it had 255X85X16 (aprox 33X10ish) BFG and they fitted OK. Coil spacers are an easy, simple & cheap option to lift a car. The upward travel is limited by the bumpstop but depending on the shocker length, this may limit travel.

I have 35's on my 80 and I changed to 6inch lift from 4inch because at 4 I was hitting the flares.

I've got a set of 33 Claws on a 2" lifted 80.
I've checked them on articulation more than a few times and all is ok.
They do hit my extractors, but they're not standard.
They do hit at speed when the suspension compresses. That's if you hit big dips fast enough.
It's only a few hundred bucks for a set of springs.

Few hundred bucks, where can I find them? I'd love to fit 35's under my 80, but I know they aren't going to with the current 2" of springs, and 20mm of spacers. The 33x12.5's I got now are flat out fitting with the lift I got. I've got the unwilling flare and flap mods to prove it. That is unless Toyota made all 80's different.
A 33x12.5" should be on an 8" rim. An 8" is actually the smallest rim that is recommended for that width tyre. Have a look at any book in any tyre outlet to see what is recommended. I wouldn't put it on a 7 if you paid me. Although, it would probably end up being a 35" tyre when on a 7" rim.
I've put my 33x12.5" BFG's off my toy 80 on my 40th Anniversary 80 Series and they rub like shite. Not what I want for that car without mods.
Have a look first, check out someone's car who has done it, there is no feeling like doing something after someone has said "Yeah you'll be right" and it's not their money paying for the mods once you've committed.
I would be happy to swap wheels and tyres with you if you're in Central QLD to see if your happy with them first before you commit dollars too it.
