Well for those who didn’t get to come to the mud run in Babinda hahahaha
Friday night Jake and his old man, Singo Chris and I (Luke) cruised up and booked into the Babinda State Hotel. We were all having a few ales and I put a DVD
Quicksand III trying to get Jake all psyched up for the obstacle course … well end of the movie Jake was snoring hahaha snap shot time anyhow … back to the drinking and dribbling shit when we were joined by Mr. James Jim Beam from Mt Isa and everywhere else u don’t want to know about. This dood was smashed off his face …
And dribbling a lot of shit, he couldn’t decided if he was from babinda or mt isa so we just called him James Jim Beam from Mt isa …

We were all giving James shit all night cause he didn’t like union and him being drunk bit really well, so he’s telling us all that he’s 30odd and has being playing front row for 20 years and he still has a straight nose and no collie flower ears .. The arms up rule apparently works “we’ve all got our arms up in the air covering our noses”
So he’s staggering around and we’re all putting shit on this poor drunk guy
And I flogged one of his JB and colas and he’s going through all our empty cans cause he was so sure he had another one … hahahaha …. By this time we should have been sleeping 1am … Mr James Jim beam has gone down stairs and he’s walkin around out near the 4wds so we’re back at it again giving him shit about union and league and he’s offering us to come down and have a run at him …such a stoner
And along comes another guy Mr fuckface as he likes to call himself. Mr James and Mr Fuckface are now at each other and carrying on like twits … so we’re trying coconut seeds at these guys and another dood comes over and flogs Mr Beams JB and cola he left on Jakes spare tyre …. Now some doods are fighting in the cars park yelling and some guy runs off and jumpin in his 40 series trayback and drives off in a big hurry …. Never seen a BJ40 move so fast in my life haha stupid smurfs
So we ended getting the other 2 pointing at the outerlimits sticker on the back of Jakes Middy for a photo of the locals …. And every one down stairs left except Mr Beam
So we’re tryin to get him to do some circle work in his Calais … and he wasn’t goin to so we were about to leave when we here him take off and pull a skid around the corner and he rocks up out the front of the hotel and starts to arc it up hahaha he nearly ended up in the news agents front window and takes off ….

Saturday morning .. fawkin Singo is up at sparrow fart and Jake is snoring like a V8 chainsaw … so I put some shaving gel in Jakes hand to see if he would wipe it over his face or some thing … :D
Went to check out the course … the obstacle course looks okish … could be some more rocks and stuff … perhaps some bigger logs and more of them …. The course is going to be really fast … the mud run is going to be interesting.. can see some hiluxes getting rolled :finger: and we put up the TJM tent and we bootie fab’d our own tent from singo’s tarp and some poles and rope photos of everything attached …
Ok so Sunday … what a show … 700hp mud runners….. sounds sweet
I spent most of the say on the obstical course scoring … sad to say the Nissan flag was not flying on the course …. Was over run by cruisers of all shapes and sizes
And a zook and a pajero, rover, a chopped bishi 4wd van, and a old skool jeepzilla
Ok so having a look at the vehicals …. Few guys running 35’s (BFG’s, MTR’s and Baja Claws) 2” lifts .. didn’t see any body lifts, a good show put on by some hitting the mud full noise on the course good entertainment when they hit hard cause the bulbar digs in on hells hole, a lot of people got stuck here diving into to bottomless mud pit, then around to the tree which was muddy to start off with but dried up and got hard and was easy … the logs … im pretty sure every one made this one perhaps they could have been a little bigger and a few more and staggered some more
The reverse over the logs … good section got the LWB’s in a knot hahahaha
Then the cross up log … this could have been a lil bigger perhaps on more of an angle
Over to the sissors Great obstical … as far as I know only one person drove this and it was a fluke hahaha in a hilux his first go and that was it … the cruiser with the claws on didn’t even get over it with out hitting pegs, the next obsticals were quite easy
Tested out the suspension travel on these with a few people tryin a few hits on the loud pedal , few people getting crossed up and getting wheels off the ground and into the crab holes these were nice and deep giving a few people a scare diving over getting the back wheels off the ground then the final section of the tracks a small hill with a steep drop off then into the tyres FULL NOISE needed here for most to get through and the corner with the mud and out …. Was a great weekend
Spesh seeing 700hp races getting crossed up :D great weekend for all

Good report Luke!
I wany to say first of all great job to Mike Limpus. With the mud run and the obstacle course running at the same time it was a big event to set up, organize, and run (also doing commentry). Well done Mike it was a great event. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!

Hats off to Singo, Luke, and the other Townsville lads who were officials for the day for the obstacle course. I think you guys did a great job and were verry proffecianal. Singo, you certainly enforced the safety code of the sport at the event and there were a few potential incidences that could have gone bad if you were not there. Well done Mate. Luke, you are a jungle bunny!!!!! You also did a fantastic job IMOP. :P

Jake, you drove like a mad man!!! Well deserved win. I still cannott believe the flex you got out of that middy!!! BJ would have been proud and AZA would have been in aww! ARMS UP BIG FELLA!!!!

If there were a few more compeditors with front lockers, the scissors would have been a great obstackle. I enjoyed the day thoroughly, and was sad to see the lack of Nissans in the event.

Matt.

Great report Luke!
I really want to thank the Townsville contingent BIG time!
We would have been sunk without you guys! We had a number of people fail to show for volunteer work. Singo, I heard some great Enforcer stories, Ehx-cellent! Danny Ainsworth was just a machine (although I reckon he had one of the best seats in the house, getting that stereo 700HP effect). I didn't get much chance to see first hand the good work the Townsville team but from all reports (and from the total lack of any upset competitors chewing on my ear) it was sensational!!!

The organising was a team effort co-president Gordon Fargher and myself along with His wife Narelle, Ugly and his wife Jen were all key players, Dave the property owner put in heaps of hours as well as the use of his equipment to prepare the site. This team got this thing happenin from go to wo in around 2 months, an extrordinary effort.
I think the event from a competitor perspective was very good (at least from the feedback I've got) Now the task is to lift the bar from the spectator perspective. Please feedback any and all ideas!!!So far:
1. Redesign Mudracing course for faster racing (man those A4WDMRA cars were incredibly speccy!!!)
2. Redesign course entry/start area so the two next cars can be lined up at the start before the previous two cars finish.
3. Have some form of entertainment for those periods of little action motox/quad bikes or the like.
4. Have lock-down of pit area to ensure competitors are available for heats (don't like this but it was really tough to get competitors lined up for their heats despite a detailed run sheet.)
5. cleaner sides on the tyre pit to prevent the tyres getting dragged out quite so much
6. Ask drivers to provide a suitable person for one of the on-course roles as part of entry? (We were soooooo short of manpower on the day)
7 Run a few smaller competitor only days so all the procedural kinks can be ironed out
8. Make obstacle harder!!!!
9. Separate commentary for the Obstacle course

Thanks again to all volunteers it is muchly appreciated!!!!!!

Mike no probs thanks for the cudos.

A couple of things that could be looked at.

I think just some recovery clarification would help. We had some potentially dangerous incidents. Could have been averted with maybe an additional brief to spotters ie basic stuff.

Clarify what the spotter is required to do in the recovery. I would rather the spotter do the hook up as he/she should know where the recovery point is and the marshalls supervise.

Tow vehicle briefed and UHF available revise recovery techniques. Pretty much is a must. If a coroner was to inquire these are the questions they will ask. I know I would.

Mike if the OBS course is still to be a feature of future events then some mods need to be made and just some extra things in place to maintain the course over the day.

I think Gordon knows which went well and which didn't. The Mud hole, the reverse. the siscors, and the final assualt were tops.

The dirt pile at the end could be enhanced to have fixe logs and build a few steps say 3/4 height of a 31' with varied spacing to the top.

The first set of whoppsie's could have those logs from the log obs placed between them / mound \ mound / mound \ and the angle of the log should be leading to the side he has to drive to get around the stake so if he doesn't use skill on the logs it would drive him/her into penalty.

More to come thinkin and going home .....

Thanks Singo great feedback!
In our manpower budget we had allowed for someone there fulltime on course maintenance we just never got the people...
Spotters under our current format should always be well clear of any revovery
Keep thinkin look forward to more...

Mike I know just to get the comp up there has been some compromise and I know different people focus on different things and a great job under the conditions set was done.

Overall Mike I think the balance is right for the OBS course just a few mods that is all pretty much an evo thing anyway. After the ASCC round you might see a N.Q culture change especially if guys like Luke and Matt build trucks in the local area. Therefore harder course structure (prolly a couple of years away yet) but you never know.

Most of the little things that could've run more smoothly are just devil in the detail and as you say manpower. Hopefully if a new club in Townsville gets up focusing on this type of driving then you might have more to pull from (then again they want more trophies).

By the way were you happy with the turn out etc and the local response?
