i'm starting to hear of quite a few cases of grenaded rockhoppers

what are people's experiences with this?

My series 1 blew itself into lots of tiny pieces. Nice crunchy grindy noise. it looks like it came down to an installation problem, a cir clip wasn't installed. As the car is only used offroad and fairly irregularly at that the problem took a while to surface, about 2 months out of warranty.

So far the Series 3 is fine, fingers crossed but i may get it checked as it was installed at the same time as greg's

Is your's noisy? I was speaking to pete who said that when he changed from a series 1 to a 3 it was noticably quieter... mine seems to have gone the other way :cry:

I got the diff gears installed recently too though so i'm not sure which is the trouble maker - but either way - i have to wear ear plugs if i'm doing more than 80kms ph.

mine S1 is well and truely out of warranty.

have already got the S3 ordered.

now to find time and $$ to work on suspension and i'm almost ready to come out and play again.

Is your's noisy? I was speaking to pete who said that when he changed from a series 1 to a 3 it was noticably quieter... mine seems to have gone the other way

Check your bearings asap. Theres no way it can be louder if everythings okay. Any questions give me a call.

I don't think its noisy but what with my previous rattly doors, all the creaks and groans and the swampers who can tell? It seems to be ok no worse than the S1 was before its death throes.

I don't know how you can notice which is the noise maker with no roof, swampers, turbo whistle and blow off, short exhaust and a hot dog muffler

That's the issue - i'd like to be listening to the turbo whistle and blow off valve and the mighty exhaust and swampers wherling along the road but instead i'm deafened by the gears / driveline noise :cry:

Not to worry - hopefully we'll have some time to sort out if it's the gearbox/x-fercase/unis/diffs etc making all the racket some time this weekend

I blew the series 1 i had in a1zook had it repaired under warranty ...........sold vehicle recently found out its blown again :!:

................it was just luck that although i gave him the standard case he also had a spare series 1 also out of a coily ..........this 1 is also rather noisy apparently

no longer my prob although i miss the little beast

I'll post some pics up of mine when I get a chance...
Almost half the teeth are clean off and shaft was showing signs of strain
pretty much every gear in the box was affected by all the metal that was thrown around!

my rockhopper has had 5 years of hard service. been in 3 different rigs. so i reckon it's done good. i'm not compaining that it faled. it's a good reason to upgrade.

Looks exactly like my 1st series one did .. "boom tinkle tinkle crunch" round a round about .. stopped dead until I pulled the tailshaft .. ..

Second one turned up eventually its been pretty good .... compared to my other gear nosies in my old gear box and rear diff howling like a banshee .. its still all good (now that I have a quiet gearbox again .. that rear diff has gotta go soon .. it cant keep making that much racket and hold together time for the toy diffs I think)

Mine was the series 1 Rockhopper - not billet or welded held together with circlips...
The new series 3 is so far workin great but probably haven't punished it quite as badly yet, but I believe it hold up much better looked very well made.

apparently the early series 1 rockhoppers were two piece... the newer ones are one piece. i've got some calmini 4:16's, they're one piece... no idea of the age tho

stumped are your calmini billet gears quite and smooth , are you happy with them. I have ordered calmini 4.16 billet gears then i found this thread and it made me feel pissed off

What are you concerned about Nelligen?

It's my guess that you think that the Calmini Gears you ordered will have the same fate as these rockhoppers we're talking about.

Don't worry - they are not the same gears. I wouldn't expect them to have the same outcome.

However, perhaps what you should be unhappy about is that you didn't buy a 6:1 or 8:1? What were you thinking man???!@!!!!?

Greg hope your right I expect the billet gears to be better than the old style. I ordered 4.16 as there for my coily and the coily has 3.9 diffs & a little lower gearing at the gear box then the leafy models and should give me exactly what I want for 31" tyres as Iam not into rock crawling just general fire trails ect . Iam also involved with Johns (xtreems) built up of his 90 modell swb we will be using s3 or simular gears in this rig as he has bigger plans then me and likes to tackel the hardest terrain head on

)) over to this thread for a little reading about Rockhopper gears. Liam points out that products being sold in the US are definately not the same as the gears he (RH / BBO) are making/selling.
