Ok fellow Nissan fans.
After writing off my TB42 on the freeway at 100K's due to a blown tyre i am now in the process of getting yet another GQ, this time i am looking at going the Diesel way with the TD42.
I know these engines are pretty reliable, last pretty well into the 500,000 mark. But there are a few questions i would like to know about this engine
First off, Mine is a Non turbo model, 1990 model, Can these take turbo's without much problems? i am thinking of shoving aroudn 10PSI into her when i do it, will this be ok?
Next is timing issue, Does the TD42 of the 1990 era use a chain or belt to run the timing system. my TB42 was great because it had a chain, never touched it in 300,000K's, what about the TD42? belt or chain?
lastly, how good are these engines without a turbo on them? i am not going to be towing anything, its going to be pure off roading on the rocks, no sand, will the TD42 do what my TB42 did? will she turn 35 tyres?

Timeing is gear driven. So no chain or belt.
10psi boost should be no problem. Recomend getting a EGT guage though. This will give you a better idea of whats going on. Than the water temp.
I ran 35's on a NA TD42 for a couple of years no problems.
TD42 dont mind reving to 4000rpm (or maybe a little more - think mine seen 4700 once or twice).

my TD42 when on 35`s takes for ever to get from 80 to 100kmh, and if you have to slow down then ferget getting back up to 100 you may aswell start all over. ratios or a turbo will fix this problem and i will be turboing soon, until then im sticking with my 32'' muddys.

Took a TD42 for a run (NA not turbo) and man they are slugs to take off on, but the low down power, my god i never knew what they could do. We took off in 3rd gear high range without any accelerator, it just idled up to speed, it was amazing
I am not expecting the same high speeds a TB42 gets to (in fact i don't really think a TB42 has that much speed anyway)

I used to get 10-11L per 100k on the highway when I had 31's (NA td42). Now I've gone to 35's I'm expecting it to be more like 12-13L per 100k.

well i am happy to be getting between 12 and 15L to the 100 on a Diesel, anything better than that i will be happy with
When adding a turbo, do you get a huge jump in fuel usage? or does a diesel go pretty easy on the fuel? remember i ain't going to be making it a hot rod, i think 10PSI is all i want in her.

Just quietly they aren't a slug when you have a turbo on them
Yeah it will stay below 15l/100km but then again this is all relative to how much stick you give it, I get below 15l/100km and I am trbd with 35's on 4.1 ratios.
If you only use the extra torque and dont give it a boot full then you should get better figures..... but most likely you'll like the power and get very stompy with your right boot.. like me..

I doubt the right foot part as she is really going to be my Offroader (more on the hardcore side of things) with just the option of towing the boat (14" Haynes 445C). I was good on the TB42, only used 3/4 throttle, never booted it that much

ive got a td42 with 35's and it is a bit of a slug to take off, once its going its cool.... i was wondering if an exhaust and extractors would make a difference for a non-turbo?
also, has anybody ever super charged a td42? figured it may have more low rev power than a turbo? does anybody know how much this would cost?

So, anyway ... Anything you can do to increase the airflow will help in performance. Fuelling is just as important ...
Nissan (or should I say Zexel pumps installed on Nissans) tend to loose their internal advance, which in turn prevents the vehicle from accelerating quickly (or as fast as it should ... TD42's do NOT accelerate quickly whether they are turbo or not).
Black smoke (if you are blowing any) is caused by overfuelling (not enough air to burn the injected fuel) or poor atomization (usually)
So, in order to fix this, after your atomisation is fixed (if this is a problem - this is fixed by replacing injector nozzles), you need to "fix" the airfllow - get more air in ... this can be done by:
- Decreasing restrictions in exhaust / intake (i.e. filters, exhaust size)
- Adding a Turbocharger

another question for u GQ TD42 owners
when mine is labouring down, say around 1000RPM or less when in gear the engine rattles like hell, sounds like its gunna fall apart almost. when you rev it up around 1200RPM or more all sounds fine.
Do the diesel's rattle alot, like its going all through the body? it doesn't feel like its viabrating, but it sounds like it. never owend a diesel before so i ain't sure whats normal with them

the rattle is gear train back lash most do this after some k's when u turbo u may find once u ajust fuel it has a flat spot at about 3000 this can b fixed by adding an eletric fuel pump in line at tank

Just regarding your fuel consumption question,
Mine is a GU wagon 4.2 Turbo with 7 inch coils, 30mm body and 35's and i get about 560K to 70 litres, it may have been slgihtly more due to my tyre size, incorrect k's reading. Thats running at 11 pound and was high way driving.
Mind you if you thrash it hard for a tank, it will only return 430ish!
