fan belt noise

Post by benjamin78au »

hmm guys , just a quick question , i have a squealing fan belt, and it is the right tension, and looks in okay condition,

I heard along the lines, that if it squeals you put soap on it. is it true???

Dunno about soap, good for squeaky drawer slides but dont think it would work for belts.
You can buy this spray on belt grip stuff in a spraypack from autoshops, that will propably help. I use it on my mothers damn excel, doesnt matter what you do the ShortyIQ thing squeaks after like 20km of replacing belt and/or tensioning.

Yep Excels are horrid for that. I think they have a problem from factory with misaligned pulleys.

Is it constantly squeeling or does it get worse under revs?? Might be something powered by the belt seizing up - waterpump, alternator

Try pouring a bit of water on the belt with engine running, if noise goes away, put a new belt on it (no matter how good it looks). Also check for worn pulleys (grooves in them). If noise is still there when when water is put on belt, maybe alternator bearings are worn. a bit of water in the alternator can check this also.

Sounds rough i know, but it helps prove a point. Where i used to work, we washed out alternators on forklifts with a hot washdown hose while they were running, they were working in a very bad/dusty/corosive enviroment tho. they actually lasted a lot longer when we regularly done this, 12 months not 3 :?

Mate just put on some valvoline rubber grease. In the red valvoline tub in the grease section. It stops the squeak for about a week or two then you put some more on.

I had this problem and the belts look fine, but when I had all the belts replaced it went away.

Cheers
