my friends Explorers rear diff just died!!

my friends Explorers rear diff just died!!
my mate has a late 90s Explorer and on Tuesday the ABS warning light came on, then on Friday night it started making weird noises and today started grinding and then the car wouldnt move !!
Rear diff fell apart apparently - just a warning - if your ABS light comes on might be similar as apparently the ABS in near the rear diff or soemthing.
$1500 to fix !!

It was the Firestone tyres that gave them the nick name "Exploder". Used to delaminate and fall apart at high speed.RockyF70 wrote:Wasn't some thing like this a common thing with explorer's?? Hence their nickname of Ford Exploders
What exactly went in the diff do you know?? Gears/bearings? Was it out of or low on oil or just had a random failure??

....and IIRC they very thoughtfully put the timing chain at the back of the engine so the engine has to come out to replace the chain.dv8666 wrote:Don't forget rear windows that just explode for no reason..
I have a friend who has just broken a timing chain in one, trying to start the bloody thing
clever

been to cape york , & beyond , never had a problem with them !!!
it was more a weight issue , than tyre fault !!!

The tires were just not handling the weight of the exploders. Were delaminating and causeing crashes/roll overs. On a zook like mooses, they would most likley lbe okay. The timing chains are a PITA. The workshop my mate works for, and KLOSTER Ford are the only places in Newcastle that have the tools to do them, and they both hate the pricks of things. Bout $4000 to get chains done, and they go heaps. Rattle like a diesel. Motor has to be removed too. Total PITA.

When you speak to most mechanics they'll tell you the Ford 8.8" rear diff is near bullet proof so I would think that maybe he hadn't checked the oil for a while i.e. level, water?
They have Dana 35's in front, & yeh they have 2 timing chains, 1 in front & 1 at the rear of motor. Pre 99's have a different belt tensioner than later mods, they fixed some of the wear probs so they last a lot longer now.
