Post by killalux »

does anyone know how to stop a safari snorkel on a 2.8d hilux from resonating, other than adding a turbo. it vibrates the whole interior and roof and its getting bloody anoying.

Mine does the same
It does tend to sh!t you.
I was thinking of somehow putting a resonating box on the air cleaner pipe (like what diesel landcruisers run). I dont know if it will make any difference though.
Im planning on putting a turbo on one day anyway.
So does fitting a turbo totally fix the resonating?
:) hehe that could be a good way for me to convince the wife that we need a turbo :)
Paul.

I didnt want to use the disc as it looks as if it would cut down the flow too much.
But I did try it and it didnt seem to make much of a difference so I tossed it.

well it did on mine, mine resinates now but that is because i had no loctite and a stud came out - so check the bolts, other than that i can't think of any thing else that could make any difference?

Try making a rubber pad to go between A piler and snorkel mount.

I already tried making a soft rubber mount by the snorkle head.
When it didnt have much affect at all I tried a little experiment and had an assistant hold the head (not screwed down) away from the pillar and I still had the vibes! It resonates inside the snorkle body through the guard.

Anyway so Does a turbo eliminate the resonation???
I was thinking it would but who has a snorkle and has fitted a turbo kit? has it made a difference?

So you bought a turbo kit just to stop the resonating huh? :)
The extra power, torque and cool whistling sound are all just added extras. :)
So what kit did you get?
And how much did it set you back?

check that the bolt on the pillar bracket are not otuching the piller, some of the hilux ones sit VERY close and when idling, (as 2.8s shake so much) it can viabrate a little!

try soft mounting the A pillar screws to reduce the noise. That helps but best is a turbo-totally eliminates the noise.

I have a 2.4 Diesel and when I first fitted my snorkel the reverbaration drove me mad, so I tried several things first a pre filter up in the ram and it did stop it to a certain extent but then I found that the radio aerial was vibrating inside the guard sending noise up the snorkel, so I replaced it with a new one and it still had a rattle unless it was fully extended. So I hoiked that one and got a cheap rubber flexible aerial moved it away from the guard all together and that solved the problem. This worked for me anyway.
