extracting lead from batteries

Thanks Dave
I'll give it a go!!!!!
the lead in old batteries is mainly (of has enough to be annoying) sulphated (lead sulphate) which is not what you are chasing. we use old balance weights from tyre shops. we get massive bags for free and the steel clips just fall away as you heat it. another is roof tile lagging or whatever its called.
then its a matter of getting an old s/steel pot, moulds, and a soup ladle as well as a lpg burner (3 ring cast iron)
and a big fan and do it outside. lead poisioning is acclumlatitive and has a huge half life. especially for pregnant moms, small kids and sperm!

Watched the "bush mechanics" melt the lead from a battery using an old hubcap as the pot, to pour over a hole in a radiator to seal it.
Apparently it worked, but then you'd have to wonder what hubcaps nowadays would allow you to melt stuff in them, and have to be lucky to hole your radiator right near someone's discarded battery.

when we used wheel weights, the sinkers were actually lighter than what we made from normal lead. Get some roofing lead from an old demo site, scrappies etc. Lead from batteries is too much hard work. as kids we used to cut open the battery, and pull the plates out, Tap all the crap out of them and then melt them down. Major PITA and the health risks were unheard of then.Ruffy wrote:go with the wheel weight idea. Much safer, cleaner and enviromentally friendly
Cheers
