SS snorkels
Hello everyone,
I'm thinking of making my own SS snorkel. I got some prices today for some 3" tube and SS 90 and 45 degree bends.
3" 304SS = $34m
3" 316SS = $58m
What SS have ppl used in the past?
Can you get away with 304 or will it rust?
Also 90 degree bends were $28.90 for 304 and $33 for 316. 45 degree bends were a few $$ less
Are these prices any good?
Cheers
Bond

304SS will resist any normal oxidation and would be fine to use.
The only thing may be one may be easier to polish up?? I'm pretty sure they weld the same and have fairly similar overall properties.
Prices seem good
Pics when you're done too

304 will resist corrosion just as well as 316 in this case, only when you're talking acid / salt resistance does the choice become more difficult.
If you're thinking about a polished finish, then if you can, try and buy the tube and bends pre-polished, try and keep them in their plastic sleeves while working on them.
Any areas that need a touchup polish can be done with a scotchbrite disc.
You can make 2 x 45 degree bends from one 90 by carefully cutting it squarely down the middle.
For the best finish, TIG is the only way to go - easier to polish, less material to cut back - arc welding is a no-no ... doesn't take too many slag inclusions to ruin a job.
Prices don't seem too bad.

If it's worth doing - it's worth doing to excess ...
If there was any chance of rust in 304, the car would have evaporated into a pile of rust long before the 304 started to corrode.
I have made boat trailers from 304 that spend half their life in the salt water - some of these are 3 years old and still show no sign of even the slightest bit of corrosion.
The only thing to be careful of is that the welds must be treated and polished to ensure that there is a layer of protective cromium over the metal.

There is a snorkle head made by Airtec (I think) that incorparates the bend in the top as the snork it fits ends squarly against the windscreen. Have seen one on a pootrol.HotFourOk wrote:I never got round to using another 45 deg bend up top... meh it works

Yeah I've also seen these on GU Patrols.. I had a bit of a look around but couldn't find any... would be a nice addition thoughausyota wrote:There is a snorkle head made by Airtec (I think) that incorparates the bend in the top as the snork it fits ends squarly against the windscreen.
