After only doing the clutch a month ago the uni joint on the output shaft from the gearbox let go this morning ( wish it was a better story but happened on the way to work ) and in the process it has smashed the yoke ?? that it sits in on the gearbox shaft. At 80kph it made a bit of a mess of the tunnel to
So I'm guessing the gearbox has to come out, again ? If so, is it possible to replace the shaft without completely dismantling the box, as in undo 6 bolts and slide the shaft out or is it a matter of stripping everything down to get to it ? By the way its an 89 1.3 5spd.
i would say it is the jack shaft,
in this case you should be able to get it out with out taking anyting apart! just undo the 4 bolts on the x-case input and pull her out!
mine did the same.. although i was going round in circles at the time.. sikaflex fixes leaks in tounel easy as!

Just remember to drop the oil in the transmission before you pull the shaft out. Alternatively you can jack up the back of the vehicle so the oil runs to the front of the transmission, and doesn't end up all over your concrete.
The yoke might be buggered, i'd have a good look at it before reusing it. I'd suggest looking at your other shafts/u-joints while you're under there too.
thanks for the offer Nicbeer, haven't actually checked it out too much at the moment hopefully the intermediate shaft is okay and didnt get too damaged when it was getting flung around. I checked out the service manual last night the part I know I have broken is the part that slots into the back of the box that the front most uni joint slots into... see below
According to the manual the box comes apart in 3 pieces top, bottom, and rear. By the looks of that pic and the instructions I may just be able to remove the rear part of the box and the output shaft, which I think slots on over the main shaft ( like a CV joint ?? ) will come with it ?? Does this sound right ?? If so, it sounds better then I expected and should be able to do it myself.
I'm working all this weekend so it will have to wait for next weekend so I'll let you know then if I need the Inter mediate shaft Nic
