gu front diff into gq
gu front diff into gq
interested in doing this just wondering which diffs people are running in the front out of the gu i've got a 4.1 ratio in the back ( gq ). are the brakes bigger on the gu diff and how much wider are the front diffs and what people are doing to the rear gq diff to fix this ( spacers or not worrying ) just want to be able to run the same track front to back with more strength in the front and maybe better brakes ?
And also where to get one of the front diffs and how much ?
How hard is this mod to do ? obviously change the drag link , what else ?

i run GU diff in the front of my GQ, everything will bolt up, brakes are bigger so are the cv's. with the brakes you might have to watch which 15" rims you run, i have alloy's and they have about 1-2mm clearance on the capiler.
you need a longer draglink and radius rod (behind the diff)
its about 15mm wider each side. i havn't worried about the rear.

Have 4.1 GU(III) out of a ute in the front in my 88GQ wagon.
$2100 (including Steering Box) from Narrandera Auto Wreckers (NSW)
I was quoted up to $2300 for diff only and $750 for GU box elsewhere
Am not worried about rear having a bee's-dick narrower track in the rear.
Regarding brakes, it depends what you already have. From the DBA cattlelog-
GU Fr rotors are larger diameter and thicker than single piston GQ's-
whereas GU Fr are thicker than GQ twin piston - but same dia.
If you get a Fr diff out of a 4.8L they are bigger still.
Pretty sure 15's will fit on all but the 4.8's.
As you say just need tie-rod and drag link to suit.
From my measurements, the GU diff gains the extra width (length?) in the narrow part of the knuckle ball. Good idea to weld in some 10mm trusses if you're gonna hammer it

with the axles i believe that was with the first lot of GQ lockers, into the GU diff, BUT now ARB only make one front locker and it suits both front diffs (Q and U)
with the older version you had to cut 5-6mm off the end off the gu axle for it to fit inside the gq ait locker centre.
gu centre will fit into a gq diff no drama.

with the current GQ-U front locker they give you a thrust block to use if you are going to put it into a GQ diff and if you are putting it in the GU diff you dont use it.turps wrote:Think theres also a thrust block, what ever that is, that can be removed from the GQ ARB so it sill work in a GU front with std axles. Read that on here somewhere.
with the pre GU, GQ locker you cant take it out, you have to cut axles if you wont to use on a gu

gq locker into gu diff
[quote="ludacris"]I was told that if you put a GQ centre with air locker into the GU diff you will have to cut the axles GU axles down. How about the GU centre without air locker into the GQ differential.
hi, if you look through the air locker where the axles go into, if its a gq you will see a steel block in the middle. if its a gu it wont have the block there and you will be able to see straight through. you have to take the block out by pulling the centre apart.
