5 speed into 4 speed FJ45

Hi, I am new to this forum and have a question.

I am not asking how to do it!!!

I am looking to put a 5 speed box into my FJ45. I currently have the 4 speed with a split transfer case (1982). I am looking at using the h55f box. I was wondering which Landcruisers had these in them.

I understand the fj60 petrol and diesels did ?all years with 5 speed box and was wondering if the FJ62 with 3f engine did or if any other models had them?

AFAIK, H55F 5 speed used in all 60 (incl. 62) and 75 series, up until the 79 series in 1998 or thereabouts.

Any 5 speed from a HJ or FJ60 will be the correct box with 75's the only boxes will be FJ or HJ 75's when the motor was changed to a 1HZ the gearbox got a fine splined input shaft. so a pre 90 model 75 will be ok. The only other difference is the idler shaft in the T-case there is a big one and a small. I think the sizes are 32 and 34mm for that shaft.

nope, the later hzj and fzj 75's ran a dfifferent box. although the early hzj75's had the h55f

Further question.

If I get a h55f with the vacuum operated transfer case, would my existing split transfer case be able to be bolted onto it instead of the button operated one?

HZJ75's had H55f 5 speeds. Only when the HZJ78/79 came the gearbox was changed to the R151f. All 60 series with 5 speed also came with the H55f. The problem with these is that the shift tower is located further aft on the body that the 45 floorpan needs to be cut to suit. The best 5 speed to use would be one from an 83-84 FJ40 as it has the proper dimension.

Yes on the transfer case question, as long as the 5 speed did not come from a 1993 or newer. In 1993 the spline on the gearbox output shaft stopped short to allow for an inner seal within the transfer input gear. And if you are using a gearbox from a 1982 or newer, be sure to use the original input gear from your car as the input gear is different where the outer seal surfaces are located.

Docdeath can u tell me if u managed to fit your fj45 transfer case on your h55f gearbox. I am in the process of trying to do this conversion myself and have also had problems with the Linkage located in wrong place. I have also found that u have to use the 60 series transfer case housing as the bearing on the transmission output shaft is supported in the transfer case housing.

To further add to this thread
I've just picked up a 5 speed out of a late model 40 series to fit in my 1982 fj45 troopy is there any tail shafts from other models that will fit saving having my tail shafts modded to suit
IE can i use 60 series 5 speed tail shafts
or any other sugestions

Yes you are right. Because I am using a box from an FJ62 (ie switch operated transfer case) I think I might be in trouble. I want the mechanical transfer shift and the 62 transfer case housing does not seem adaptable for this.

Anyone who has fitted a 60 series 5 speed to a 40; have you had to mod/ remove the chassis cross member??? looks like mine will have to come out to clear the rear output shaft of the t case. Any ideas anyone???

Yes I removed my chassis crossmember from my FJ 45 from behind the gear box there was not enough room.

Ok i'm going to cut the x member out this weekend, can anybody give me a reason not too?... Dont really want to do it but if its the only way to make the 5 speed fit she's coming out! :twisted:

I cut the x member when i done mine the only other way i see that it can fit in is to take the body off

Sorry missed your early question.

I had to move my handbrake lever sideways a little so as the 2wd/4wd high low shifter would be able to move through it's complete range.

All I can say about the whole job is there is not much room between the floor of the car and the top of the transmission.

Done this mod a while ago but now need to fit the speedo cable. Cable to short due to extra length of gearbox. Does anyone know if the speedo cable off a 5 speed late model bj43 will fit. I think these were released in 83.

Mate, are you sure it's too short? I put a 75 series fiver into my 45 series and didn't need to swap cables. Unless it's just a 40 series thing?

Not a 40 thing. I used the stock cable on my 40 when I put the 60 box and transfer in. Just unclip the cable and run it more efficiently and it will reach.

nope. only a 5 speed 40 shaft... maybe a Fj70 shaft? the rear shaft in a 5 speed 40 is the shortest cruiser shaft i've come across

60 shafts are too long.
