Offroad Racing - Aust Championships at Goondiwindi

Post by Dirtcomp »

The final round of the Australian Offroad Racing Championships is being held at Goondiwindi this weekend. Kicking off on Saturday with a prologue, then the top ten shoot out followed by 3 laps in the afternoon. Sunday will have the 5 remaining laps of the 50km course. It should be an exciting event with a good entry field and the championship to be decided at this round. Scrutineering is being held in the town park, Callandoon St from 6pm Friday night and will be a great opportunity to have a close look at the cars.

To get to the track:
Travel 10 km east of Goondiwindi (towards Inglewood) on the Goondiwindi – Warwick Road (Cunningham Highway) turn left into Scudamore Road
and follow 1km to Pit entry gate on the left.

The action was absolutely awesome and the temperature was very hot, approaching 40 yesterday. Shannon Rentsch driving a Chenowth SR20 powered buggy from Victoria clinched his third consecutive Australian title, ahead of Bruce Chapman from Tamworth in a Subi powered Jimco in second and Eric Phillips from WA was third. The arena area that they built for the event had a couple of big jumps and the track was designed so that the cars re-entered the spectator area halfway through the lap.

Geoff Pickering from Townsville won the production 4WD class in hte Pajero. Colin Hunter driving a highly modified Grand Cherokee was up with the A-Arm buggies until he busted the pinion in his front Dana 44 diff.

Shannon would have to be one of the most naturally talented drivers i've seen. I have competed against him a few times and he is a real spectacle.
Nice family to.
I'd go as far as to say that he is better now than Mark burrows or Craig martin were in there day.

He is definitely very talented. Backing up this year to take his third Championship was a big effort. To win 3 out of 5 events against the quality of competition there was is a testament to that. A few years ago there were only a handful of American A-Arms, so to a certain extent it came down to those who could afford the best technology, now a big part of the top twenty is at this standard.

The other stand out performer this year I believe is Eric Phillips. A newcomer to the national series, he has stepped up to the A-league in a brand new car and really pushed many of the more established big names.
