Re: Hilux LSD options
there is the factory clutch pack limited slip diff, this is ok if you put fresh clutches in it or wind in a bit of extra preload.NISMOgemini wrote:just been hunting down options on diff centers for my hilux diff...

Lokkas are legal but you are unlikely to enjoy the driving experience.
any reason why you don't want an Air Locker? are you aiming for street grip or offroad ability?
cheers

Free air locker to the first 20 callers!
this hilux diff is in my gemini (not my 4x4 )..
want it to be nice for street driving and curcuit work.. able to handle 250-300hp at the wheels.. iv heard the factory clutch LSD arnt very strong in this kind of aplication? or is that just a myth? i woudl assum 4x4 abuse to be more punishing then street/track thrashing.... in a 1000kg vehical

air locker is ideal. leave it open for mild street, then lock it up for strip/circuit.
yes the factory clutch pack is weak but that's nothing to worry about, 300HP will shred hilux crownwheel and pinion easily. If that is really the sort of power you are running perhaps consider a 9.5" diff from a landcruiser.
I still say you will not be happy with the street performance of the lokka, especially in the wet - they are esentially a spool with the ability to allow one wheen to turn faster than the driven wheel, but if any slip is detected at the driven (ie inside wheel in a turn) then it will lock instantly - if this is a road vehicle, imagine squeezing the the go pedal a bit in a corner in the wet and instantly having no traction as both wheels spin. tops.

air locker might not be the best for cuircut work, could cause the rear to break loose easyer then a conventional LSD.. air locker would be perfect for drag racing thodumbdunce wrote:air locker is ideal. leave it open for mild street, then lock it up for strip/circuit.

not changing from teh hilux diff now. spent to much getting this one set up for the gemini already.. theres a lot of mazdas and dattos runign the hilux diff with similare and even more power the this, runing under 10second passes.. so there must be somehtign out there that there using to tuffen them up (crown and pinion)... might have to ring around some of the "go fast" shops
yeah the LOKKA does sound a bit iffy with the how "locking up when u give it some power" could get dangerous on teh street
I would look into a Detroit series 4 softlocker it has the similiar theory to the lokka but it delivers the end result a lot better. I think it would suit your needs perfectly. My vehicle does not make the hp yours does and I find the open diff of the Airlocker to be a pita on the street at times.

The lsd centre holds the ring gear stronger than an open centre, with two wondows in it.... go an lsd, and put some extra spacers in the clutch spring if you need it to be stronger.....torsens are ok, but do suffer i hear from stripping their worm gears...the lsd and washer under the spring will give you strength cheaply. Stay away from the auto lockers.
