GOOD LUCK they dont sell them anymore for a good reason...most have lost all their smoke...and once that gets out....they r no good anymore...
Pull the main gear circlip and look at the bearing inside there...the rollers usually come out square

Yeh the fairy overdrive(normally hooked up to the back of a 4 speed) was not a good piece of equipment. The 5 speed is a better option.

My best advice is to only use it in 5th, so that takes out the option of using it uphills also...the reason i say this is that top bearing is oil splash lubed, and it doesnt get enough unless you are spinning things fast...like at 100km/hr

Well 4th is about 2300rpm @ 110k's, I tried 5th and it sat around 1300rpm which is not recommended for 5th gear which is small, thats why the h55f's often pop out of 5th with a bit of wear.

Overdrives = more gears, so the gear oil will probably need changing more often as well.

does it use the same oil as the gearbox? or does it have its own oil?

my 89 HJ60 does about 2600RPM at 110k's in 5th. (indicating your fairy overdrive is 1:2),

but for 4th to be 2300rpm at 110 that would mean your h55F has different gearing than mine. My 4th would be about 3000RPM at 110k's

True, that makes sense, I live in the city so I wasn't going for much of a drive after work this week... I'll go for a belt tomorrow and check that :)
