Are you sure it would be pinging?
Thats what my first thought was. A few months ago i ran it on premium for a few weeks plus a fuel additive designed to stop pinging, but the sound remained, so i switched back to unleaded.
And also, you shouldnt be using ethanol blended fuel for your daihatsu's. On the chart at the servo i work at, says that it is not reccomended due to fuel line incompatibilities.
What else could it be. Its not always happening under acceleration. If the accelerator is more than 50% depressed it makes the ticking sound. If i drive like a grandma, you dont usually hear it. Only in 3rd/4th/5th too.

mechanical advice appreciated...
Moderator: Tiny
thanks heaps for all the help/advice... i'll do some investigating re. the applause swap.
thinking along the lines of new motor now, i've been giving her a little bit more abuse. whatever is wrong with it, it can't be too bad at the moment. they seem to really like to rev out and have a great feel/sound when they do.
one last question, what would be your guess at a price for a mechanic to do the swap?? wouldn't trust myself to do it and it would probably take me a month!!

Some minor mods, depending on the particular motors. I had to make up an adaptor for one electrical connection to the Temp sender and you'll need to swap the (rudimentary) oil cooler onto the new motor.
I think I also had to change the sump over as well. Otherwise it'll go straight in.
