Mine has 603,000KM's. I re-built it at 550,000KM's--it wasnt using any oil between changes and still had good performance. The bores were still within spec and bearings were just starting to show some metal. I ended up doing a complete re-build, but it would easily have done another 150,000 if not more. The right oil and regular changes are critical to long TD 42 life. My valve rockers were badly worn though, and my rocker shaft was pretty scored. These made setting tappets very difficult and made a fair amount of top end noise.
If its performing ok, and with no piston blowby and good oil pressure, then go for it.. They are an easy--although expensive, engine to re-build if req.

92 LWB, 376,000km. Just towed a caravan to Coffs & back after having the injectors done. Didnt use any oil & averaged 15.5lt/100km.
It was using a bit of oil before injectors & I suspect the extra fuel blowing by the rings was causing this. The injector guy also said my injector pump could do with a tickle up but I would only get another couple of HP for that. I will leave that one until I turbo it. I suspected this as it is a bit surgy under light load.
Regular servicing is the key, if it has been looked after then it will serve you well. They go forever.

Re: Problems?
As mentioned, noisy tappets, Piston blowby, look for coolant leaks where timing cover meets cylinder block next to power steering pump, leaking injection pump..MD4x4 wrote:Anyone had any major problems with their diesel?
If I was to buy this high mileage rig what should I look at doing to the engine to ensure further life out of her?

Water pump replaced
Broken exhaust bolt
Aircon idler arm bearing replaced
Could use a new sump gasket
Hijack question.
Has anyone dropped the sump and replaced the crank bearings at home?
PITA?
Worth doing?
