Gas gauge reading empty when tank is full

Post by joe crothers »

My GQ is on duel fuel and when the gas tank is full the gauge in the cab
and the one on the tank reads empty. Can the sender in the tank get stuck
or could the guage on the tank be stuffed, if so how can this be fixed any
help would be greatly appreciated.

1st guess is float full of petrol, second is the sender is failing.

Either way the approach would be to pull the sender, clean it, and check for anything abnormal. I doubt it's anything but the sender and I doubt you need to do anything except renovate it, should be a $0 fix.

You will most likely find that there is lose conection if it has happened all of a sudden. If its been like it all the time the power and earth wire are on the wrong way, they need to be swapped around.

The same thing happened in my Kingwood ute, the dude who hooked it up skrewed up the wires.

gas gauge

when I take the power wire of the gauge on the tank, the lights on the gauge on the dash show full. When I connect it up it slowly goes back to red empty. Ive disconnected the earth and cleaned it still no better.

if the gauge on the tank is also reading empty then the float in the tank is stuffed

common problem from what ive seen

new tank time or new sender time all must be done by a licenced shop

or learn to use the odometer for distance to empty

I would be getting it fixed, tank prices are through the roof here

Gas tank age

Post by joe crothers »

How old does the tank have to be before it needs to be replaced? My system was installed in 1999. If it was just the sender unit that was stuffed
do i still need an LPG specialist to do the job including removing the tank, or can I remove the tank and have them replace the sender?
cheers joe

Surely they would replace the sender with the tank still in the car?

cheapest way is run the tank empty

unbolt it
take it somewhere to be retested and get the sender fixed
reinstall yourself (not legal tho)

10 year test so assuming the tank was stamped in 99 its still got 2and bit years to go

theres no point in having the sender replaced/fixed without getting it restamped in my opinion

I have lifted the tank to fill the 2inch void from the bodylift, the guage and
valve are directly behind the rear chassis member.

senders on lpg tanks most any way just un screw try that they are the most common failer if that fails the get the gauge tested and then the sender in the tank most gauge joints and can do this as they will have varible resitors to control it
