more power out of a TD42 without turbo charging

Post by Tayls »

ive got a td42 with 35's and it is a bit of a slug to take off, once its going its cool.... i was wondering if an exhaust and extractors would make a difference for a non-turbo?

also, has anybody ever super charged a td42? figured it may have more low rev power than a turbo? does anybody know how much this would cost?

cheers

hoonz had a supercharged TD42, ive driven one once and it went like a zyretc.

extractors wont help that much, maybe look at diff ratios first. what ratios are you currently running??

From turning up the fuel pump, how much power can you gain? 10% ? 20?

i just fitted extractors and a exhaust and it did fark all. only did it cause the system was free. i have a shorty gq running 35 too and i think all you can do is save for a turbo cause everything else dont do much.

DONT BUY AN EXAUST SYSTEM CAUSE IT DOES NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

biggest issue with blowers is there lack of compression braking, as when you back off throttle its still boosting ........... unlike a turbo

and blower will be alot more coin to set up than a good turbo ........... basically there is a reason 99.99% of people turbo them

also any more than exhaust and inlet mods there aint much in the way of cheap gains without boost. you can play with cams injector timing add lpg port the heads etc. but all of this will see poor gains for the dollars spent
also why people turbo them

got the standard ratios... wasnt too keen on changing them because i try to run my 31's while on road. Actually heres a question, if i done my ratios, how would it run being on the 31's instead of the 35s? 3grand doing a 100?

mine does 2000 with 35's and 2400 with 31's and 4.3's apparently even out ratios with 35's so my guess be about 2800. if that makes any sence

The only things I'd do are things that will be used once turboed. ie snorkel, and maybe exhuast. But you need a 3" for the turbo and that is a bit big for N/A. In reality the thing you should do is put up with it being a slug and save every penny for a turbo. Anything else will be wasted as you will eventually put a turbo on and then the rest is useless. Take it from someone who has been down the same track you are on. I've now gone the next step and take the TD42 out and are installing a VH45. Nothing like 7400 rpm!!!!

$8K really isnt that bad for that sort of power, be interested to know what the conversion costs in comparison.

I did snorkel, exhaust and extractors, injectors and dyno setup on my TD42 n/a and although it doesnt make anymore power it does rev a lot easier.

mate of mine was going to go a twin turbo 1uz into his gq ute. he went to test drive one. also drove the guys td42t wagon. he said the wagon pulled just as hard and paid the guy 8k to turbo his.

it hauls serious ass.
but for 8k your could put in a nice v8. not saying the v8 will be better depends on what you wanna use it for tho i guess lol

anyway back to non turbo mods. you can turbo a gq for 1500 bucs if you look round and dont mind swinging a spanner. or you could waste 1500 bucs on other mods and acheive 1/4 the improvement, only to pull it all out after spitting the dummy and going the turbo.

cast manifolds can be had for as low as 400. grab a turbo from ebay, import wreckers, trader etc. 400 bucs. an rx7 one will work well. bolt that on that leaves you 700 bucs for an exhaust shop to make you a exhaust dump pipe and cross over pipe. a few gaskets and a cheap boost gauge

the pay someone off here a carton or have a crack yourself at cranking the fuel a lil

from my research i would say the gains from a deisel gass set up arent seen untill you turbo it. you do get some power improvements but not in comparison for money spent. that said on a turbo truck is seems to make about the same improvement again as turboing it. and econamy improves too
