speedo not working but odometer is, help

Post by dreaded monster »

any one have any info or ideas in how to fix a speedo on an 89 mav the odo works but the speedo doesnt, i havent had a look at it yet as i just bought it and had it shipped to my olds place to where i can pick it up in a couple of weeks, i am going to fly in and want to drive straight out the following day so i wont have a great deal off time to muck around with it.
the guy i bought it off said it just needed a new speedo or cluster, however could it be the cable, and if so is it an easy fix or could it be a sensor in the gearbox, cheers

If ODOmeter is working, it wont be the cable or gearbox sensor..... Will more than likely be a dry solder joint on the PC board on the back of the Speedo itself, not the cluster. Even so, check the screws that hold the speedo to the main clucter PCB, as the sppedo gets its power via the screws. I think 100KM/h is about 2200RPM with 31's and 4.11 diff ratios......

Ok a bit of a hijack, but has anyone had a problem with the speedo going right round of the clock and has stopped there. But every now and then pops up to like 120kph then back, and it can also go back around to read normal speeds and then the odometer will start working. I hope you guys can follow that and have any ideas or where i can start looking.

cheers.

mudpig mine was doing that . pulled it out and found corosion tracking between some of the solder joins

i scraped the corosion off with a lil screw driver the hit it with contact cleaner.
works fine now.................tho it flickers at 90-110 to i think i might take it back out n resolderall the joins too
