Maybe I'm biased, but one of my mates had one and all I can say is..... don't do it!!! We were forever ripping plastic bits off it everytime we went out. And that wasn't very often either, just the normal camping trips.
I thought it was a total biatch of a ride and they lacked in power.
Anyway... just my 2 bob worth.
Goodluck!!!

When in doubt..... UTE-ERIZE it!!!
i rode in one a few times and they are SLOW but if your pulling out the motor then thats not a problem. the soft tops were horrible but since your looking at the ute thats not a problem and as mentioned before the ride is pritty poor. with your plans they should be a good base but the front axel housing has some problems it leaks grease.

The diffs from memory are a dana or a dana copy and are not really that bad.
A commodore v6 would also probably be a good option in one of these - remember you are replacing a 4 cylinder so space is a major issue.
if you intend to drop in a big engine and gearbox then what worked in jeeps should work well - 4 litre inline 6's (probably ford though easier/cheaper to get) and compact v8's (again windsor is smaller). I really dont think you'd fit a Gen 3 in easily.
A turboinjected mazda out of say an early mx6 or ford telstar would be interesting.

Drop a Kia Spotage motor in 94 kW/175Nm. Should bolt up to the existing flywheel/bellhousing (same basic block as existing engine, more modern head, EFI, etc...)
Should give you a Suzuki Sierra sized/weight vehicle with a 2 litre engine.
Hilux 5.89 diffs/33's and you should have a decent little rig...

yes it would be interesting to do, does anyone know wether the mazda 2.5l tdi would bolt up not much biger than the standard 2.2l diesel

BTW, it's "ROCSTA". Not being picky, but if you do a web search with that spelling you'll find a number of people OS who have done engine swaps with mazda vans and things like that.
I don't think it would be anything like Sierra size/weight; my guess is they are pretty heavy actually.
I've heard the chassis is a bit weak on them but never saw signs of it when a mate had one. It actually went pretty well.
It wouldn't be a total dog as a base for a project, definitely workable and definitely something a bit different. Stock, no way though.

This is not legal advice.
You could always put a snail on the 2.2.....known 2 wrote:yes it would be interesting to do, does anyone know wether the mazda 2.5l tdi would bolt up not much biger than the standard 2.2l diesel

I didnt know they made them until 2000.....
By the way the ute model is called the "stubby". great for those beerhounds amongst us.
2.2 Diesel ute 1240kg 53kw 142Nm yet the cabchassis which should be lighter claims 1250kg and the full body softtop weighs 1220kg
...... (typical redbook)
So yeah about 1300kg seems the go.
53kw isnt bad - its on par with the Hilux 2.4 diesel (55kw) but is still crap Even the 2.8 Hilux diesel was only 60kw
Petrol performance is pretty ordinary but as talked about there are other mazda options and parts which can be transplanted. From memory it's a standard F8 block.
The diesel would just need a snail and a small turbo would be pretty easy to find and fit. Im sure that there's a mazda commercial engine in your local Jap import wreckers that has the appropriate manifold and all.
Certainly I never had any complaints about Paul's Rocsta's offroad ability considering it was an unlocked vehicle.

GQ's are ok.... but like all the big rigs (dont talk yourselves up toyota boys) I believe they're drastically overated until you're running around with 35" tyres or better, which is kind of obvious and illegal.
When I moved to my Maverick from my Vitara, despite the 33"s I fitted I noticed a very definate reduction in my offroad abilities.
There's a Jeep ute on ebay right now if you're prefer....
